Are Scat crankshafts any good, or should I stay with the stock 454 cast crank? I did a search and still need more input. Are they cast in China and machined in the US? Is the crank reliable and ready to install, or do they need to be worked. If I could get a hold of a used forged crank and get it reconditioned, I would, but can't find any. Any suggestion or comments?

I like 'em, sure they may not be as kick *** as high end cranks (lunati etc) but for the buck they're a great deal. I build a ton of 540 CID Merlin block / headded marine engines that produce 600 HP. I use the scat nitrided steel crank (1/4)

Yeah, in one of David Vizard's books, he states that these cast Scat cranks have been put into thousands of 600+ HP engines by a friend of his, and not a failure to report yet. I would say they are good, heh.

I am having a 600HP 496 built right now and I am using a 4130 SCAT Crank. I haven't run it yet (since it is not done yet) but the machine shop said it looked like a quality piece.

I have beat on my scat superlight crank for two years now. Under 75 to 200 shots nos, on the street and the strip with no probs. Oh and I shift at 8000 rpm all the time My 355 is a BEAST high 6s in the 1/8 no trans brake with the stock rearend, 327 gear.

How much horsepower do you plan to have?

68 Camaro SS 396 - 468 BBC now, Air Gap Intake, 781 heads, M21, 12 bolt. / 67 Chevelle SS 396.

Some of them make look a little 'iffy' out of the box at times - but they've never failed ...

The scat cranks, rods have been very successfull and horror stories are few and far between unlike the eagle brand which have more stories on the internet! I would not have any hesitation in using/purchasing scat as they have a good history and record!

scat in a 454 is a safe bet in my opinion only. If one has a high reving motor than their forged steel cranks are a better choice and more than capable for the street and stress we put on them. The track may be a different story although many will/can attest that they have great success their too! Pretty much a safe bet with scat.
