The sad truth is that people continue to be taken in by this rubbish. If you haven't heard, a hobby that is growing in popularity is to play along with scammers, wasting their time, tricking them into doing crazy things, all the while keeping them from preying on others. There's a few sites dedicated to this hobby, colloquially known as "scam baiting". Here's a good one: http://www.thescambaiter.com/
They have all kinds of stories, some of which are laugh out loud funny - one person tricked a scammer into paying huge shipping fees for what he thought was crates of laptop computers, which was actually a crate of just junk - old computer parts, bricks, and even a washing machine!
