What's a little gas between friends right?

As Im working on getting my snow plow Jeep tuned up for snow season. I also put on storm windows and peeeee youuuuuu I smelled gas near the meter. I called the Gas Co. and they were out in about an hour and no leaks at the meter but the smell was all around in the air... he started probing with his elec. smell meter gadget and a rod that pushed into the ground... presto... he found it, a main line leak caused by our friendly gophers.
He dug it up and patched in a temp. fix and ordered new line from the road to the house with gopher resistant line, most likely next spring. That was all a week ago ...but this past Friday, I smelled gas in the yard again.. called them up and they ran out again and found another leak, that probably was a weak area the gophers chewed on but other holes were releasing the pressure. When he fixed that area of the pipe, the next weakest spot let go... so a crew of 2 dug it up again and bypassed the pipe near the house with new line layed on the ground for temp. use till they called in emergency crew to lay all new line right away, before frost got into the ground and most likely other gopher holes along the way. Its 535 feet from the road thru our fields up to the house, but at least its their expense not mine.
I told Mrs. Click that we could have been on the evening news with a blown up house if that leak had been inside the house but outside it was mostly harmless. Repair guy said the gas in the ground should have killed off the gophers that had set up housekeeping in this area. Thats good news.
Today Im waiting on the locater crew to mark elec. line, cable line, phone line etc. so the gas co. crew can start plowing in new line on Tuesday. Its fun watching work crews. Its better done now that in January at -30 degrees.

At least it is on their dime (and hopefully before your gas meter).

Was it metal gas line? I didn't know gophers would eat metal. Sure it wasn't subterranean goats?

It was yellow plastic gas line, they use that for most installs nowadays but if its in gopher area, they switch to something corregated and double sleeved to keep the critters away from the primary line... Gophers... ummm MN Gophers beat Nebraska on Sat.

We don't even have to have a reason.
