Rusted Subframe Repair

Does anyone have any advise to repair the subframe connector brackets that are rusted out? Can I get new brackets or can I repair the rusted out ones. My concern is doing the repair and not affecting alignment. Or should I get a new subframe. If a new subframe is the way to go, I would prefer an original one as I am not a fan of non original. Are original ones available? I had no idea mine was rusted out until I removed it from the car. Sound familiar?

If you are talking about the body mount holes, yes, there are repair kits from the Camaro vendors. Getting a different sub frame is an option, too. They are out there.

Experience...... It's what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

I had one mount that was rusted out. I bought the repair plates that have the hole pre cut and a buddy and I had it welded in in about 20 minutes. Nobody will ever see it, worked like a charm.

If the 5/8 alignment hole is still visible in any of the rusted pieces be sure and use it to align the new plates to. Two ways to repair-put the new plates on top of the old ones and weld or cut the old ones out and weld in the new. I ran into the same problem with mine.

I had the local waterjet place cut me some patches out of 1/8" thick steel I think that I had them made with the inside diameter at 1.5" and the outside ones at 2-3/4" (not too sure about the outside measurements but I don't think it really matters) If I were to do it again, I would cut the inside holes at like 1.60" or something. They were just not big enough at the size they were cut at and that extra 0.1" would be enough to allow the bushing to slip in there.

I think the measurements are what you need more what you need than pics... the location of the center of the hole wold be the most impoortant thing that you need to pay attention to.

Hey Zulu do you suggest I find another sub frame or repair? I don't want to waste time on a basket case. I knew I was in trouble when the frame slipped over the bushings. The deeper I dig the more I think this project wants to just be allowed to die peacefully. Seems like a shame, but there is a point when a humanitarian decission must be made. Should I euthanise?

If that's all that's damaged, it's fixable. For the squeezed in section, you can use a hydraulic port-o-power unit to open it back up, OR you can simply cut that section out just on that surface and weld in a thick plate that replaces it.

For the firewall subframe mount perch that is rotted away, you can buy a patch kit for those. It is $52 for the kit in most catalogs and easy to weld in place. I would print out the Fisher body specs measurement sheet for your car, and go from there.

You may want to strip down those areas further with a wire brush to see just how far the "rot" exists. JMHO....

I think your plan "A" should be to try to find a reasonably priced rust free replacement subframe. Plan "B" should be to repair what you have IMO.

Hey Andy any idea where I can find an original subframe in good shape? I have never seen one, but would love to go that option if possible.
