Hood alignment

I want to remove the hood from my 69, so i can detail the hinges ( i believe they should be painted natural color? ) but am afraid i wont get hood aligned , its perfect now, any tips other than just marking the hinges?

Re: Hood alignment

Mark the hinges and also use a heavy masking tape around all the edges of the hood/fenders/cowl/ etc so you don't scratch anything.

Re: Hood alignment

Thanks Michael, the tape is a great idea, you think it will line up perfect just by marking the existing location of hinges to hood ?

Theoritically, yes. But it's the execution that is so important.

Go slowly with it as there may be shims between the flanges of the hinges and the hood. Make sure you identify which ones came from where if they have been used as they could be different in size.

Re: Hood alignment

I usually combine what Michael said and use masking tape around all sides of the hinges as my marking method, and mark the location of the bolt washers although if you're going to detail the hinges that'll be gone. One side of the hinge is tough because it's a bend but the other three are sharp. That way you're left with a nice little box where it should go. Best tool is another person to help. Even after reinstallation you may have to leave the bolts a touch loose and bump it around.

Re: Hood alignment

And, if you care, the originals were gray phosphate, not natural. You can buy very expensive phosphate-looking paint from the resto houses, or you can phosphate them yourself for $20-30 (haven't priced the chemicals in awhile) You can buy them from Palmetto Enterprises in South Carolina. If interested do a search, the procedure has been discussed here many times. It's really easy.
You could also send them out for phosphating, for$100 or so.

Re: Hood alignment

I think you need to mark the hinge location on the fender, too. Been awhile, but I think there's a little variation there, too.
