Question 264/271 Isky Mega Cam, 062 Vortecs or 601 H.O. Heads.

I have a Isky Mega 264/271, 214/221 dur., 112 lca. Mega Hy Cam. My motor is a 350 w/ 882 heads. I plan on removing those heads for one of two that I have. I have a set of 062 Vortecs, valve job, bowls blended, ports mildly ported and look clean. Maybe I should cut the guides down to be safe, because my Isky Cam is .450/.465 lift. The rocker studs are pressed-in and look good. I was told they cc at 63 (might check that). The 601 H.O. heads have the 1.84 intake valves changed to 1.94, exhaust valves were kept at 1.50. The chambers on the 601's were unshrouded and cc at 59. I did a good bit flash grinding at the intake and exhaust ports but was going to some more port cleaning thru-out. The intake valve bowls are blended. I have a set of Fel-Pro 1094 head gaskets at .015 thickness and my pistons are stock dish. That should put me at 9.5 to 1 (Vortecs) and 10.0 to 1 (601's). This will be for a stock weight 77 Z28 with a TH-350 trans and 3:42 to 1. I will be using 1 5/8 headers and a 2 1/2" x-pipe exhaust, super turbos, dumped at axle. I was thinking of changing my convertor to a 2000 stall. My gut feeling is use the Vortecs. Pdq67 loves those H.O. heads, as I swapped some talk with him on "my second gen. camaros owners group" site.

The Vortecs will make alot more power. The 601s arent big enough for a 350 it will run out of port around 4500 rpms. The 882s you have out flow the 601s.

Just a few more things to add/or ask. With what I mentioned at the start, the exhaust ports on the Vortecs are polished and I was thinking of doing the same on the intakes, so would there be a advantage to doing that. How would this cam perform with a 112 lca on the street below 3000 rpm. Would it of better if I got it at a 110 lca.

A fine polish usualy does no good on the intake port-The boundery layer effect makes the flow at the port surfaces lazy to almost still-shape is more important.
Also a rough surface can help by breaking up fuel puddles and flow dead spots.
Vortec's for sure and I would cut the guides-for insurance and to promote bigercamitis
That cam should be nice under 3000rpm-you have the cam-run it. Don't sweat 2 degrees lca on a mild motor-it will be a nice runner with good street manners

The finish on my vortecs intakes are sort of a as-cast finish that you find on a aftermarket aluminum intake port.

Allow me to also add that this is a stock 350 long block with 39K. I would assume stock dish cast pistons, crank and stock rods. I have a "010" block that my gut tells me I have a two bolt main. I believe that's what came in these cars from 77 to 81, without dropping the pan to see. I'm thinking 330 to 375 hp at the flywheel. How can that hold up with say 80 to 90 percent street use. ?

Thumbs up Re: 264/271 Isky Mega Cam, 062 Vortecs or 601 H.O. Heads.

Funny, b/c my -601's out in the garage intake ports cc'd at 160.0 and 160.+ cc's so to me, they are big enough to feed a mild 350 engine fine, imho!
Certainly not SOTA, but for darn near scrap plus S&H, not to shabby by me!

One thing I do caution everybody to check and that is to make sure the chambers aren't too small b/c mine cc'd at 53 aND 55 CC'S, SO W/ .015" OR .020" THICK SHIMS, YOU WILL PROBABLY NEED TO ENLARGE THEM BY UNSHROUDING BOTH VALVES!

gET HER UP TO RIGHT AT 10 TO 1 cr. AND i FIGURE W/ JUST AN OLD 268/270/272 CAM, SHE WILL BE fine!!

Sorry about the darn caps!!

if you don't mind spending more money for the parts you'll need to run the vortecs- intake, valve covers, rocker arms- then i'd use those.
while you've got them apart to cut down the guides, you should put in screw in studs..

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

I'll throw another vote for Vortecs if (like novaderrik said) you're OK spending the $ on the other required parts. I run 305 H.O. heads on my 307 (-416 castings) and they're a decent head (I'd certainly guess you could pull over 4500 even on a 350 with the 1.94 intakes and a little porting). BUT I like the fast-burn combustion chambers on the vortecs and they flow pretty darn well out-of-the-box. I'd also be a bit worried about 10:1 compression on pump gas with the iron -601's with that "mild" of a cam, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

Besides lifters and pushrods, I just need a intake.

Fine and rightly so, but I think I gave $50 + s&h FOR MY OLD -601'S.
