Re: Shafiroff 540/795 HP

Be careful, not long ago we had a big NMCA race here at our local track and there was a guy driving around in a corvette with "SHAFTED BY SHAFIROFF" written all over his windows in shoe polish. Not sure why but im sure it was over an engine or bad service of some sort.

Re: Shafiroff 540/795 HP

That seems weak for a 540. Seriously, I'd look at having Mark Jones build you an engine if you're thinking about going the crate route. www.vortecproperformance.com

I'm looking at Mark to fresh up my 468 and he thinks 800 HP is possible with some porting and minor upgrades.

I second that...his 720+ hp version is less than $7800.00 and you could use the 2 grand you save towards other upgrades like a good carb and distributor and ignition system.

I think it's just an entry level 540 our rolling chassis camaro is only 1850 lbs so it will be fast enough for our first attempt racing

Re: Shafiroff 540/795 HP

I have used a few of his 540s, 2 crate motors and a short block. Nothing but good to say. Made the power they were supposed to make, none were the 795HP version. All were hydraulic roller versions, low 700HP range street motors.

As for the guy running around the race track in shoe polish? I found out a long time ago there is so much more to every story then shoe polish can cover, I don't dare repeat it for fear of not knowing the entire story!

Perfect example, I was at a Airboat motor shop this morning and he has a customer that has been MFing him on forums and to everyone he can talk to. I was there when engine builder removed the MELTED plastic intake (LS motor)! I have seen these motors get to 300 degrees and not hurt the intake. Sufice it to say, the owner got it a little hott!

Re: Shafiroff 540/795 HP

i have a 540 from them they set up for e-85 and could not be happier with it. i did have some upgrades like shaft rockers and cometic head gaskets. but it has performed as advertised and pushes my 3000 pound 67 to low nines in the 140s.

Re: Shafiroff 540/795 HP

What? Seriously?
I've tore down a Shafiroff 565" for inspection with big chief heads and a huge shot of nitrous, absolutely nothing was wrong with the motor made 1,200hp, quality parts as advertised. Don't let one fool ruin a good name.
Shafiroff and Reher-Morrison are BIG names in the racing scene.
Maybe the dude who was rolling around just had shafiroff valve covers thinking he had a shafiroff motor that was really just junk sold to him.
Yeah, they are expensive, only problems encountered with the high dollar Reher-Morrison was snapping rockers in half and sometimes studs, called them, parts sent out for free, and their reps at the tracks are good guys, free parts, and will help you out if you are having problems with their stuff.

Thumbs up Re: Shafiroff 540/795 HP

I have a 582 big dawg that runs on pump gas from Shafiroff and after two years it still works great. I have it in my 68 camaro with a turbo 400 coan converter (3400) stall and 3:31 gears and it runs hard for a pump gas engine. I am totally impressed with this engine, it's a real sleeper, till you get to the track!!!

Re: Shafiroff 540/795 HP

Shafiroff's shop is a couple towns away from me. I had him build me a Dart 434 short block and had them add all the remaining parts i had from my previous engine. (dart heads full roller vavetrain, the works). i wasnt sure that the motor was gonna make the same hp as the 434 ultrastreet, but he reassured me thatthey will work it so that it made good hp. well when I went there to watch the dyno pulls it exceeded their 434 ultrastreet crate motor. and all Shafiroff had was a big smile on his face! haha
thats my great experience with them
