Hp overkill

I am plotting a new engine for my 67. Right now I am kinda leaning towards a 650hp 496 BBC.
The car will not see track time and is primarily a weekend cruiser...and maybe an occasional friendly deserted blacktop pull... I try drive it as much as I can weather/schedule permitting.
I am just getting sick of knowing that all the kids driving new Camaros and Mustangs would eat my lunch. But, I am just wondering if I am going overboard..

Dont want a high-strung small block
Dont want to go LS
Im aware of the install/weight issues


Right now the car has:
Warmed up original 350
TKO600
12 bolt w/ 373 posi
Lots of suspension upgrades


Thoughts??

IMO 650 HP big block in not overkill for the occassional weekend cruiser -especially if setup properly

I built a 496 last year for my '69 - its very streetable and a blast to drive.
SFC's and Cal-Tracs at a minimumum to get the power to the pavement

I have a 67 Camaro with a 496 600+ hp. J.W. Performance TH400 and stall converter. Also I have 4:11 gears with Cal-Tracs on the rear. Just had it painted and still working on the interior. I also hope I didn't go overboard for the street.

650 HP with a stick will be a real challenge to hook up on the street. Impossible really, even if you use a sticky tire like Hoosier Quick Time Pros.

The 496 with that big arm is going to make some serious low end torque.....making it even harder to hook in not so good conditions.

I would consider a 427ish BBC with a 250 shot of nitrous....will be easier to hook up and then you can manage the nitrous and bring on the power when you can handle it. If you want to make it a sleeper just install the nitrous gear under the intake, the kids will never be the wiser.

Just an idea.

I realize putting the power to the pavement is gonna be an issue... I figure a gear swap will be in order to help with that. I really dont think I will be trying to launch the car that much anyways... in the effort to avoid breaking things....
Looking for insane roll-on power...

As for NOS... I dont want to deal with extra fuel plumbing... which was one of the reasons I am avoiding the LS set-up..

If you can build a pump gas all motor setup, you will love it.
Fuel mileage may not be that great, but the power is always there.

You start playing w/ a 250 shot, then you potentially get into race fuel for safety & an expensive bottle fill every night you take the car out. Figure about 2# N2O ($10) per pass. I ran a small block Nova with a 175 shot & it cost me $50 every night I went out.

For my next build, I went with a ProCharger & spent the money one time instead of changing bottles constantly.

650 on the street is not too bad if you invest in the suspension & a good set of sticky tires. The 6 speed will make hooking it up more of a challenge. Try it on stock suspension/hard tires & there is a good chance you will need some paintwork from the times you cannot keep it in your lane.

have a friend with a Mark Jones 670hp 496 in a 71 Vette
car is pretty much stock xept motor.
mild gear and verter, mellow cam, rear streetable cruiser
runs 10.50s
Talk with Mark about one of his 496s

you need a fuel system and exhaust to support that kinda power.
at min. frame connectors and slapper bars with an good single adj. shock in the rear ... and tires. it will still be only good from a 50-60mph roll.

Personally I really like the ZZ502 or I'd go all out with a 572.

Not quite the power of a built 496 but extremely reliable and streetable.

I ran a ZZ502 in my 67 with a TKO 5 Speed and a 12 bolt with 3.55s. Was a great street machine and the OD tranny made it an absolute pleasure to drive.

I don't worry about the new Stangs and Camaros too much. Roll up next to one in a 1st gen and you don't have anything to prove.

I'm doing a built LS7 approx 635 hp with a 6 speed and I drive like an old lady (so says my son)

Mark Jones is who I was planning to go for my engine if I pull the trigger on this project. Great rep, reasonable $$ from what Ive seen...
A really dont worry too much about the newer cars... I know our rides have something they can never have.... but every once in a while.... ya just have to put the pups in their place...

Aftermarket has grown to the point where you can get a lot of BBC for the money. If you want to build your own but not chase down parts, look at this kit:

More power than GM's low compression 572 due to better heads. Low deck design makes a nice fit as well - add some orange paint and none of the new pony car guys will know what hit them. Straub is a big hit at Chevelle forum for custom cams.

Big power + manual trans usually ends up costing a bunch of money and things will break. T400 or even better 4L80 would be easier to drive and far quicker in 1/4 with the right converter.

Another option would be Procharger for your 350 - many options here as well and power is limited only by your wallet. This option would require significant fuel system upgrades.

Don't forget the cost converting from a SB to a BB. What is a high strung SB?

I dont know what I consider high strung small block... huge cam, low vacuum maybe (something my wife cant drive)
After a doing some measuring, looks like I will have to scrap my current radiator/Mark VIII fan combo if I go big block...
... maybe I should just build another small block and be happy with it....

either way...I do appreciate the input....
