Factory style roller cam with sbc cam

I'm builing 383, and I intend on using a small base circle cam. The block I'm using is a '88 year block, and I intend on running a factory style roller cam/spider/lifter retainers, etc.

My question is, since the sbc cam drops the lifter down some in it's bore, will the lifter drop down far enough to exit the bottom of the lifter retainer?

Also, anyone know if there is a max cam lift to use, so the lifter body doesn't come into contact with the bottom of the lifter retainer?

Thanks

Re: Factory style roller cam with sbc cam

I'll let you know! I'm installing a reduced base circle cam here real soon in my roller block. I hope the answer is "NO".

The way I understand things, there is no "standard" base circle on performance cams. They need to alter the base circle that the lobes will pysically fit past the cam bearings when you install it. The bigger the lobe lift, the smaller the base circle.

Re: Factory style roller cam with sbc cam

I called the Comp Cams tech line. They said to order the cam with no more then 0.050" undersized. He said something about a potential problem of the lifter droping down to low, and loosing it's oil pressure.
