350 Tuned Port Won't Start

Hello guy's.. I got a problem with my 1991, 350 tuned Port... It has not been started since last summer,, I shot some staring fluid in it and it tried to start, so I'm guessing it is firing okay.. Can you tell me where the gas filter is at,???.. I put some octane booster in it hoping that might help.. Is it possible that the injectors are stuck, I would'nt think all of them would be, does that matter,????... Has anybody ever disconnected the fuel line at the back of the car where it comes out of the tank and drained/ pumped the old gas out of the tank,???.. will that burn up the electric motor,????... There looks like two gas lines going up into the tune port tunnel, is one of them a return line,????.. I thought about disconnecting the right one and turn the pump on to see if gas is getting up to the motor, but I did'nt know which one to disconnect... Please give me some advice. I really appreciate any help you guys can give.. Thanks,, Dale gonewacky

The gas filter and pump are inside the gas tank.
One of the lines is a return, and there is a pressure regulator where they come together, under the plenum.

The pump is switched on by a relay controlled by the computer.
There is also an oil pressure switch, the computer will cut off the fuel if the oil pressure doesn't come up.

You might get better info at http://www.thirdgen.org if it's back online yet.

The fuel pump strainer is in the tank not hte filter. The fuel filter is on the frame rail in the rear the best I can remember. You can take the line loose if you want but you won't be able to tell hte pressure and whether you truely have good volume. If you really don't have a lot of experience with this it might be in your best interest to have it looked at for you.

Re: 350 Tuned Port Won't Start

Okay,, I can hear the fuel pump run and when the line is full, I hear the pump stop.. The motor will crank over, but it won't start,, I shot some starting fluid in the plenium and it started for a few seconds, then I thought maybe the gas might be bad from sitting almost a year,, so I put some octane boost in it hoping that would help. but it did'nt... I hav'nt disconnected the gas line yet to see if gas is being pumped up to the carb.. The pump is brand new, put in last year.. any thoughts????????????

Is it tuned port or carb?

Is it TBI ?

Do not disconnect a line to check fuel pressure, that isn't a good (or safe) test.

Hearing the pump run doesn't mean it's good. The tuned port motor needs 38-42 psi. It needs to have a pressure gauge hooked up to it and checked. Anything around 20 psi or less isn't enough, and it must hold pressure too.

If you have no gauge and hookup to check fuel pressure, then remove a spark plug or two, one from each side, to see if it is drenched in fuel. a good indication, engine is getting fuel.

If they are, engine is flooded. Hold throttle to WOT and crank to dry out cylinders.

If plugs are dry, check the black wire of the injector connector for 12 volts to ground, both sides of the engine. This is a fused input controlled by a relay. The other wire, a purple for one side, green for the other side of the engine, come from the ECM.

Re: 350 Tuned Port Won't Start

What does "WOT" mean ????,,, Someone told me that if the oil pressure is'nt up to par that as a safety thing it will not let the engine start, but like I said earlier, it did start when I shot starting fluid in the plenum... I'll try starting it again tomorrow, and then I'll pull a couple of plugs to see if they're wet... I just can't imagine the pump would get weak just from sitting a year.. like I said before it was installed brand new last year, and only has about 3 miles on it's time... But, I have been around long enough to know, sh*tt happens... OBTW,, JimM, I checked out the third gen site, it seems to be an OK site, but I did'nt get much help, and I notice there where a lot of postings with not very many helpful answers from it's members... Maybe they were a bit overwhelmed with so many questions, This Team Camaro site is the best site around !!!!!!!!
