Time for another 68 Z/28 to be restored

We purchased our 68 Butternut Yellow Z/28 in the early 80's and for all the good, bad, and ugly reasons the restoration process just sat. Now the time has come to start the process and thought it might be beneficial to someone (including keeping me on track) to update the restoration process via this thread. A little background first: 01B built Camaro with black std. interior, original born with engine, M21 trans. and rear. Fall of 2008 I found the original owner (Eddie M.) with an old 1972 Phillips 66 charge receipt that was under the front bucket seat carpet. Eddie was a great person to talk to along with being a car guy so he told me a lot about the Z/28. Purchased at Roger Dean Chevrolet in Charleston, WV in late March or early April, 68 according to Eddie. He told me he was the one who purchased and added the air cowl plenum and headers as he was into the trans-am scene and Mark Donahue. Verified as well that the Z/28 had come with 302 fender emblems but he later added the Z/28 emblems to the fenders. When my wife and I purchased the car way back when it had most of the things original except for a few items like the water pump, starter, exhaust manifolds (remember those headers) but most of the hard to find (high $ stuff today) was there.Some might ask since the car sat so long what prompted the recent start up? Well, for many years it was "I'm going to get to it one of these days" but it never happened and the reason became obvious to me that to do the car correct it was beyond my skills hence Lonny Gordon and his team at East Coast Muscle Cars were chosen. Their workmanship is just fantastic along with being just great people. So the journey begins but would not have without the support of my wife:D For those of us married, we know how important that is, right? :yes:

Thanks Dan and Everett! We won what they refer to as 1st Grand Nationals Winner and one can go back and go for Senior Grand Nationals Winner. I'm still learning about AACA but people are always cordial and its more like a fun car show than competition. Judging is not as critical on correctness so it makes for a more laid back but fun experience and can see why many go this route. Don't get me wrong, there are some stellar vehicles there and I'm amazed at some of the pre-war vehicles to the detail and potential cost to do one of those rascals. After car was judged I saw the captain of that team talking to a gentlemen with a yellow shirt. Remember, I'm still learning! He spent quite a bit of time looking at car and asked me a few questions, said thank you and moved on. About an hour or so later he came back with 5 other men with the same yellow shirt and they started to look at the car and told me it was being reviewed for something later which to be honest I did not understand. Later I was told by two people the yellow shirted gentlemen were national judges evaluating our 68Z for consideration in the national awards, usually in Philly in Jan. If it was accepted I would receive a letter request for information and pictures. Guess we will see but it was interesting as they spent awhile looking at the car and my info on original born with engine, trans, and rear. I encourage to go to a AACA event and consider joining.

I did receive a letter from AACA stating our 68 Z/28 had been selected to be reviewed for a National Award. The letter stated the awards are presented in Feb. at the AACA Annual Awards Banquet in Philadelphia. As mentioned before some simple paperwork and two pictures showing the entire automobile is all that is needed but obtaining the quality of pictures requested is not exactly my cup of tea as they say. I had the car out four times between sunset, early morning, and overcast days. These are a couple examples of what I took on different days out of possibly 30 examples LOL. Win or lose it was nice to be considered for a potential national award.

I recently received the 2020 AACA National Award for Factory High Performance Car of the Year. The awards banquet was June 5th in Williamsburg, VA but had a family wedding that day so missed that presentation but award was mailed to me. Thank You AACA....

Received an email and text asking about a couple 1968 related time changes and one related to the "Disc Brake" round medallion on disc brake pedal pads. I had never researched and did not have the originals as the pedal assembly had the pads off when we purchased in 1983. So during restoration, I just installed what assumed was correct, a brake pedal pad with that shiny disc brake medallion. But that was wrong as reaching out to several friends with survivors, friend who records info on '68 Camaro's and Jerry McNeish it seems to be around March of '68 when that pad started to be used. Since our built Z/28 is 01B that prompted me to replace the brake pedal pad with a correct one especially with the Camaro Nationals coming July 14 & 15. We were invited and plan to attend so stop by and say Hi.....

Getting ready for Camaro Nationals next week and thought it was also time to correct our original but not born with Y55 Delco Energizer battery as I've noted the wording was highlighted in yellow for commercial sales or red for example if a R59 Delco Energizer but wet celled batteries from the factory did not have the script highlighted in color. So it was time to take it off and a little lacquer thinner quickly did the trick.
Also remember the original battery hold down & bolt assy which is unique due to its large .87"

While at the Camaro Nationals with our 68Z a good friend and I got into a conversation about the air cowl plenum air filter and possible other uses. I still have the born with original air filter but since its a little dirty and used LOL, it’s not in use except in a couple past judging events. Also had a later not technically correct NOS service replacement but decided not to waste that filter for part time. Check Post 236, page 12 for pictures of our original A226CW and later NOS service replacement. Time for another 68 Z/28 to be restored
During restoration I decided to find something else that might work and found a thread on CRG where RatPack mentioned an Olds 1979/80 350 diesel air filter works. I checked that out and sure enough it did. Same O.D. & I.D. but slightly higher by an 1/8”. The extra height is not noticed when installed in the air cowl plenum and the good news is these filters are still available as they also fit additional engine combinations. I use Wix #42096 which is also NAPA’s “Gold 2096”. Rather costly but even found K&N has one, filter #E-1690. If looking for a filter Wix website wixfilters.com gives you ability to check sizes available to possibly find an alternative.

Chick, I wanted to thank you for this thread. It has taken me months to read it all, but it is so valuable for us other 1968 Z28 owners. I did notice one item that isn't related to the car that may not be correct. On your reproduction window sticker, you call out the rear bumper guards as an option. Even though the Z28's came with the bumper guards, based on other actual window stickers (see photo below) and the example in Jerry's book, they are not called out separate on the window sticker. Recently a couple good car friends were calling and asking to check on or what I might know concerning ’68 vs. ’69 center caps. They both were communicating there were differences but trying to gain more info. A well known judge had told me in 2018 that there was a difference but he had not checked it out and I never did either except looking in my NCRS 68/69 Judging manual which did not mention any differences. Well first thing I decided to check is my good friend Skip’s late 07D ‘68Z and his late 09D ‘69Z survivors and I’ll be, all four of the ’68 have a smooth transition from inner dish to outer face or lip but all four of the ’69 have a sort of an indent in that transition that can be easily caught with your finger nail.

I then thought of checking my new 6th Edition NCRS 68/69 Judging Manual purchased this past August at Corvette Carlisle. Upon checking the wheel section NCRS now states and shows ’68 model year smooth transition, and ’69 model year with “prominent lip.” No mention of transition time period other than model year. Surprising but that is what is stated per NCRS. Currently trying to review early ’69 survivors for that lip. Center Caps on our 68Z were purchased in 1979 and not sure why but two have the aforementioned lip but not as pronounced as Skip’s late 09D 69Z. I will be In the process of changing the two caps bottom half to be technically correct.

Note: We reviewed a reproduction cap and it has a very “prominent lip.” After looking at many used caps friends have I’m currently thinking the smooth transition cap used in ’68 will be much harder to find. Check your caps and report back!

We happen to have a restored '68 Corvette and It's later service replacement GM center caps have the "prominent lip" so need to replace that portion of cap also. A good friends later GM service replacement center caps have the smooth lip on all four so we did some swapping, two to complete the needs on the '68Z, and two for the '68 Corvette. And I sent 4 smooth lip donor half's to Dell Polishing to restore a few issues. When those come back two of them will be used to finish the '68 corvette.

Our good friend Bruce @ Dell Polishing completed the restoration of the above four center cap halves. A good option for anyone needing one or the other is picking up an old center cap as I have found they can be picked up for as little as $10 at swap meets. With these four returned it gives me 10 of my needed 8 for our two 1968 models. Needless to say I'm cherry picking the four for the 68Z, LOL

Chick, thanks for your help with this. One more front suspension-related question(s): Did you do the riveting of your upper ball joints to the upper control arms (Post #160) or did you send these out? Any suggestions for getting this done? I noticed that the ball joints on your car appear to be riveted in after the control arms were painted which is what I'm looking to do. I learned of a Corvette shop that came highly recommended by a couple of Camaro guys but they want the control arms sent in primer with the paint work to be finished after their ball joint install. I really appreciate your input. Jim
