We purchased our 68 Butternut Yellow Z/28 in the early 80's and for all the good, bad, and ugly reasons the restoration process just sat. Now the time has come to start the process and thought it might be beneficial to someone (including keeping me on track) to update the restoration process via this thread. A little background first: 01B built Camaro with black std. interior, original born with engine, M21 trans. and rear. Fall of 2008 I found the original owner (Eddie M.) with an old 1972 Phillips 66 charge receipt that was under the front bucket seat carpet. Eddie was a great person to talk to along with being a car guy so he told me a lot about the Z/28. Purchased at Roger Dean Chevrolet in Charleston, WV in late March or early April, 68 according to Eddie. He told me he was the one who purchased and added the air cowl plenum and headers as he was into the trans-am scene and Mark Donahue. Verified as well that the Z/28 had come with 302 fender emblems but he later added the Z/28 emblems to the fenders. When my wife and I purchased the car way back when it had most of the things original except for a few items like the water pump, starter, exhaust manifolds (remember those headers) but most of the hard to find (high $ stuff today) was there. Some might ask since the car sat so long what prompted the recent start up? Well, for many years it was "I'm going to get to it one of these days" but it never happened and the reason became obvious to me that to do the car correct it was beyond my skills hence Lonny Gordon and his team at East Coast Muscle Cars were chosen. Their workmanship is just fantastic along with being just great people. So the journey begins but would not have without the support of my wife:D For those of us married, we know how important that is, right?

Here is the car in the late 70's!

The Z just before it left for East Coast Musclecars!

Where I had mine done are no longer in business but I would suggest checking Bair's Corvette as I've talked to them at Corvette Carlisle and they have a good reputation. Maybe that is the Corvette shop that was suggested to you

Going back sometime ago I was interested in how the 68 front spoiler differed from the '69 model spoiler and how it was attached. I’ve never had the opportunity to review an original front #3916673 spoiler as they are extremely rare to find due to GM changing designs for 1969 and many got destroyed over those early years as they were just hanging down adhered to the valance by some screws just waiting to hit something or have some type of damage.

That changed recently when I had the pleasure of reviewing a 68 L30 M20 survivor. A great car to review since it's still in the ownership of the person who ordered and purchased it. Assisting with keeping the car in great survivor condition involves the owner properly and nicely storing it since 1977. Notice the texture and grain look .

This was a NOR 03D built 68. Very difficult spoiler to find if you were looking for one.

Reference Door Mirror Gasket #3927398
Always learning details concerning our Camaro's and one I observed for the first time over a year ago involved the door mirror gasket having in bold letters CAMARO. At that point I started to check with friends/acquaintances that had a survivor to note if that was common or the norm. I'll be, yep they were all stating they did. Normally you can only see half the script to maybe a third but I've noted one 69 that only the top part of the first letter ("C") could be seen and a 68 where the whole CAMARO could be seen but when it was installed at the factory it broke off the lip at the rear of the gasket. Here is the gasket and you can see the impression of how far back the mirror was when installed.

Friends 68Z and what seems to be the norm, that being seeing half to a third of the CAMARO script.

I literally spent a year trying to find a nice original gasket and finally was able to find a few and now have it on our 68Z.

Again, I never reviewed, saw, or read anything concerning a 68/69 Camaro Door Mirror Gasket with the "CAMARO" script until seeing one on a '69 at the 2022 MCACN show. That led me to want to know more about this type gasket and its use. Checking some friends survivors I discovered it used on both '68 and '69 models and that led to wanting to find a nice one for our 68. Even though I kept just about everything original to our '68 that was not used I had no memory of keeping the original mirror gasket except deciding to use a new one for restoration. Just assumed I threw it away like the original door handle gaskets replaced with NOS gaskets.
Well that all changed recently while searching my hardware bins for an original pair of #9427325 screws and bingo, there was my original mirror gasket. And yes, it has the CAMARO script and quickly realized why we did not use as the bottom area of gasket has its lip broke off (see picture) which I've found in originals a lot when the mirror was placed very rearward (rearward meaning mirror installed more toward front fender) in the gasket. Note in the picture how our factory mirror placement made an impression and how the entire CAMARO script shown originally, but the bottom area of the gasket is broken as the base of the mirror during assembly would have been placed on top of the gaskets lower lip instead of being placed within the gaskets 360 degree lip. The '68 NOR 03D Survivor we reviewed a few months ago had the same issue.

Reference part #3927398 68/69 Door Mirror Plastic Gasket
Here is a close up of our '68 NOR 01B gasket with impression of factory mirror placement and next picture of a local one owner '68 NOR 03D with similar mirror placement but not the norm IMO as most seem to be factory installed where one can only see half to a third of the "CAMARO" script.

Over the recent holidays was reviewing in depth the 67/68 Legends Judging Manual. It stated the plastic wire gutter screws were a shouldered screw in '67 and a captured washer screw in '68. Dang, I thought they were all shouldered screws and was sure that was what I had put back in our 68 with some new AMK hardware.
First thing I did was to check the 1968 AIM and it called out #9427325 assembly which in fact is a screw with captured washer. When a GM part # is listed as an assembly you know it has to be more than one piece like a captured washer.
Second item was to check my master list of hardware I put together years ago and have listed in this build thread and elsewhere, and I had it correct (9427325) there.

Third was to check the car and verify I had installed the in-correct shouldered type '67 screw.

Next up was to have my good friend Skip check his '68Z survivor and yes it was a captured washer screw. Luckily, I kept just about every piece of hardware not used so next step was pull out my bins and look for those two correct #9427325 captured washer screws, and sure enough there they were. Both screws have mfg. identification of two circles and "A". Doing some research I found a 20 year old thread where a member stated his originals had the same mfg. ident. I've noticed that ident also on oil pan plugs. Wanted to show both the '67 shouldered (mfg D) I took out and replaced with my correct originals. Some simple restoration and they look new
