Wheel decode - YZ

A friend of mine has 4 steel wheels with the code of YZ and all have a K-18-4 date. What were these originally used for?

Are you positive it has a YZ code?

Yes, they are YZ steel wheels, not Rally wheels.

Re: Wheel decode - YZ

I thought I could find you an answer here: http://www.camaros.org/suspen.shtml#Wheels
but I don't see a "YZ" listed. Again, are you sure it's "YZ" ?

Yep, all 4 wheels are YZ. He got them with a 1963 Corvette, not a Camaro.

Can't be a '63~64 wheel, GM/Kelsey-Hayes didn't code wheels this way until after 1965

YZ is a 1969 Full Size 15 X 6 standard steel wheel.
The code is not quite complete, but the Month of production date is the number on the same side as the 'YZ'...
The 'K' is Kelsey-Hayes, the first number after the 'K-' is the plant it was made in. So if that '1' is correct, then it is Romulus, MI.
The '8' may be the year manufactured - or 1968.
Sometimes the numbers are very litely stamped or painted over making them hard to see.
Would have to know all numbers or see a good a picture to decode for sure.

1968 Convertible
Some trucks
Other V8 things - some of which float
Other V6 things - none of which float
Oh yeah, and 1 "Straight-Six" ...

John do you have a website you found that lists all the wheel codes you could share with the rest of us or is your info from a book ? I'm sure alot of us have plain steel whels we'd like to be able to ID.

I don't have a 'book' ... I've got a Binder
I use lots of sources for my cross-references, most common of which is the GM 1975 Master Cat. with wheel part numbers and codes.
I also have several hand typed lists from data I've gathered over the years from several sources.
It was always interesting to me the number of different wheel combo's - the different manufactures and wheel designs/profiles available for most vehicles from the factory. Plus, I was always looking for certain wheels for my cars over the years - paid to know which ones I wanted ...

There are several pretty good published sources for some the same info.
I'd start with something like Alan Colvin's "Numbers" books, then look to some of the "Interchange" books by Paul Herd and finally some of the specialty publications for Camaros of given years or generations by MacNeish, Hooper and the others.

And if think it's hard to find good info on Chevy rims - you should try find decodes for BOP/GMC stuff

(edit) WOW ... I just noticed this post is a YEAR old !!!
No wonder I couldn't remember typing this yesterday ...

Re: Wheel decode - YZ

Yea......I found this thread by googling "DC rally wheels"...just cleaned up my rally wheels and found the DC code on them....no other markings outside of KH (kelsey hayes?) and GM (general motors) on the inside part of the rally wheel.......and 15x6 on the inside part of the rim where the tire covers it. I am assuming they are 67 vette rally wheels then from the information I have found.....

Yep, good assumption. Large stamped DC coded rally wheels with no date stamp were correct 15X6 67 Corvette rally wheels. Used same trim rings as later used on 15X7 z28 rally wheels. Service replacement DC wheels had a smaller size DC stamping with a date code which started in 68. Original non date coded DC rallys bring decent $ if in nice condition but nothing like DF coded wheels, etc....
