Purchasing American Racing TTDs for my '68

After much thought and consideration, I have decided to change the stock rally wheels in my '68 to the American Racing Torq-Thrust D Chrome rims. First I was considering 17" but I have reconsidered and I've decided to go with 15" rims:
15x 7 in the fronts: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ARE-6055761/
15 x 8.5 in the rears: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ARE-6055861/
Both have 3.75" back spacing. I believe that the stock rim is 4.25" backspacing. If I understand things correctly, the smaller back space in the new rims will give better inside clearance but will make the rim stick out farther (outboard).
For the fronts it will mean that the rim will stick out 1/2" more:
The original was 7-4.25 = 2.75 from center:
TTD = 7-3.75 = 3.25 (-2.75) = 1/2"
For the rears, the new rims will stick out 2" more:
8.5-3.75=4.75 (-2.75) = 2"
Do I have this right?
Just before I make the big investment, has anyone else used these rims on first gen Camaro?
In terms of tires, for the front I'm thinking BFGoodrich TA 235/60R15 and for the rears 255 /60R15
Would this be a good profile?

Hi Vic,

I think you might get some rubbing on the outside of the tire when you go over dips in the road with those back spaces, especially in the front. I had that back space in the front and it rubbed over dips even with a 215R 65. I changed rims to a 15x7 w/4.25bs and the rub is gone.

I really wanted the Torque Thrusts but, they didn't have the back spacing I needed so I went with Summit Legend 5 series rims 15x7 w/4.25 and P215/65R front (P225/60R will work too), and for the rear 15x8 w/4.5bs and 255/60. No rubbing.

Vic, The rear backspacing is definetly not very good either. With those 255/60/15's they will stick out like a sore thumb.

I would not waste my money on those wheels, unless you can get the correct backspace for your beautiful 68.

I'm glad you're doing your homework before spending your hard earned cash.

Thanks guys. I will defiinetly re-think this.

Bobby, I like your recommendations. These are now high on my list of real possibilities.
One thing I'm not clear on, is where the rubbing will be. If the backspacing is smaller than the original, the tire will stick out and rub on the lip of the fender...is that where yours was rubbing with the 3.75 bs?

Did you go with the grey or the chrome? Would you mind posting a pic of your car with those wheels. <please>.

Mike, thank for your input...it sounded good on paper, but in practice I think (you're right) it will look very much like a sore thumb.

Yes, my fronts would rub the outside of the tire on the fender lip.

I went with the grey, I wanted a toned down look.

Let's face it, TT-D's look so sweet on any 1st gen but they rule on 68's. I'm running 15x7's all the way around, 3.76BS, with 225/60 in front and 245/60 in back. I could easily fit a 255 in the rear. I have Hotchkis 2' drop springs in front and the 1.5" drop leafs in rear plus a set of 1" lowering blocks.

That looks really good, I need to rob my TTO's from my 69 Z and bolt them on our 68 Vert for pic. Our 68 Vert isnt nearly as nice as yours but i would bet the TT's would really make it pop.

For what it's worth, I recently installed 15x7's with 3.75 back spacing TTO on my Z and dont have any tire rubbing issues with 225x60's in the front & 235x60's in the rear.

Have you concidered the Vintage wheel works V-45's they are supposed to be close to producing 15's with more back spacing (4.25 or 4.50) bringing the wheel inboard. I just purchased the 16's with 255/50/16's and the wheels tuck in the back real nice no rubbing.

TTO's look great on your 69 Z Nick. I debated back and forth on TTO's or TTD's then I met up with a friend of MusclecarJohn at Laguna-Seca that had TTD's on his LeMans blue 68 Z-28 and I was sold. They just look right.

After much consideration and re-consideration, I went with the Summit Legend 5 chrome rims:

7 inch for the front and 8 inch for the rears.

The price was very good, they look really good and I heard lots of praise from them from my local tire guy about them.

I just received them today. They look great...hope they look just as good on the car.

When the good weather returns I have to take my car and new rims to the tire shop and see what sie of times fit best. Most likely will be going with BFGoodrich 225/60R15 for the front and a 255/60R15 or a 245/60R15 for the rear. Have to see if the 255 will rub. I do have a set of adjustable air shocks that may just rub with the 255.

No, I didn't use hub- rings. The rims have conical seat lug nuts to center the wheel so I didn't think I needed them.

255 for the rear.
