Summit 383 Chevy Remanufactured Engine Blocks

Anyone ever used one of these?

I'm going to build a 383 and this seem to be a pretty good deal. Also, I have never built an engine before. Can someone recommend a nice "how to" or "step by step" book or manual for a 383 build? I go by the old saying, "If they can do it, so can I".

Go on utoob. Look at Boxwrench. I like it. If your block is prepped and you get a balanced rotating assembly. Do it! I haven't built my own yet, but I will next time.
With all of the experts on team Camaro for help, you will be in good shape.

I like your attitude. So many people these days want to simply click the buy-it-now button and have the engine show up on the doorstep (I've been guilty of this myself recently and regret it). I've built 3 engines (4 if you include the motorcycle engine I rebuilt when I was 12) based on your type of can-do attitude and all were very successful projects. I didn't have cpu handy so learned everthing by talking to machine shops and reading various hot rod magazines. The process is really easy and anyone with 1/2 a brain and some decent tools can do it. Preparation and planning is where it's at. Choosing the right parts combination should be a high priority. Knowing what RPM range you'll be wanting the power in is key. So sounds like this 383 block is a good starting place and then you can pick out a nice rotating assembly (pistons, rods, crank, bearings). Get a good one but you really don't need to spend the dough on a high dollar set up that will be overkill and unnecessary. Sorry can't recommend a book but just wanted to congratulate your decision to build. No more crates for me - they are typically assembled by someone who cares 1/2 as much as you about the finished product and going that route takes a lot of the fun and pride out of the process.

That's a sweet block. Late model with one piece seal and set up for roller cam. If you use the Scat stroker kit, it'll drop right in and you'll build it just like any other engine without having to clearance anything. Of course with the Scat kit, the block doesn't need clearancing anyway but it looks like they set it up to use any kit. On other kits, you'll have to check clearance between the connecting rod and cam though. Be sure that you buy a stroker oil pan.

You can probably beat that price and no freight to boot if you check with some local machine shops. Most of them have buttloads of blocks they'll sell.

I have a buddy that owns a machine shop and just so happens I bought an .040 block clearanced for 3 3/4 stroke from him last week. 1 piece seal block and he threw in the oil pan, windage tray, rear seal housing and spider mess all nice and clean. All for $425. Of course I didn't let them do my cam bearings or block plugs as I do all that crap myself so that's about 50 -75 bucks. And I don't believe he cut me a "buddy" price either other than to give me the extra junk.

I just got a quote for a block all the machine work and assembly of the short block if I supply the stroker kit for $650 plus the cost of balancing the crank(around $200). I'd like to build it myself, but that seems like a good deal.

Before I'd buy the Summit block, I would look hard at the new Dart SHP block!

And somebody on the car site's sell's new Dart, but "Blem" blocks that he check's over real close for re-usability and he will stand behind them for way down the line.

Is he Skip White??

And I only mention these b/c they are both 400 size blocks.

I purchased a set of Edelbrock Performer heads (64cc) about a year or so ago for the 327. Also, I have a Performer intake and an Edelbrock 650 carb. I'll run those heads. I may change out the intake to an air gap and upgrade the carb to a 750. I'll run the 650 first and see how that set up works. As far a an ignition... don't know. I am going to build it myself. I gotta be able to say "I did" when the question is asked.

The dart block seems a bit pricy at $1532 (from Dart). I sent an email to White Performance (Skip White) inquiring about their 383 bare block. I'll post the info once I hear back.

I never heard back from White Performance. I guess they are not hurting for business. My local machine shop owner tells me that I may be better off going with a pre 86 block. He say's that some of the later blocks were manufactured South of the border and may not be as good as the earlier ones. Any truth to that? I'm really leaning towards the block from Summit and building the entire thing myself. Also, he asked if I would have room for the dip stick on the later blocks. I assume that the dip stick is on the other side on the later blocks?

If I had a choice I would go with a Dart Little M Block. They feature extra-thick cylinder walls and decks, 4-bolt mains with splayed bolts, enlarged bosses for offset or oversize lifters, and scalloped water jacket holes for improved cooling. Summit sells them.
