What cam for street 454?

Hi from Australia!

I need some advise on what camshaft to run on my street 454 BBC '69 Camaro.

I have fresh 454 (30 over) 3993820 heads with 2.19" & 1.88" valves, bowl blend & angled milled, static CR about 9.2:1, Holley 780 vac (3310), TH350 stage 2 rebuild 2500 stall, C396QJ old school duel plane intake, hooker super comp 2" primary 3.5" collector 3" exhaust to 3" hooker aero chamber mufflers & 2.5" tail pipes, standard 10 bolt highway gears (I need like 3.55), carter 110gph electric pump.

I am after a strong street car with heaps of torque and 450-500hp. What camshaft should I use - hydraulic flat tappet like voodoo 60203 or solid like CC280S? Thanks in advance.

Re: What cam for street 454?

Hi,

Just read your configuration for your motor, I would stick with a Hydraulic configuration, why did you go with 9.2.1 if you are looking for 400HP or more...? That is my only concern here, I would of at least started with 10.5-11.0 to start with and then
pick an agrressive Hydraulic cam.

I'm just concerned with a huge cam and small/low compression will not equal 450HP?

I'm sure others will chime in here to help out to get you to 450HP range...

Re: What cam for street 454?

I stayed at 9.2CR as the engine was just rebuilt when I bought the car and I didn't want to do it again ($). The bottom end has flat top pistons so I had the heads angle milled to get the compression up.

Re: What cam for street 454?

OK, that is what I figured... You can buy a radical Hydraulic cam but you may have to get a vaccumm booster to run you car, like I have one in my 1969 Camaro.

Check out my video on my Black car running minute 4 and you can hear the cam, car has about 450HP.
454 is 11.0.1 compression and a agressive Hydraulic street cam.

Hope this help a bit.

Re: What cam for street 454?

I just want a strong street cruiser. If I can't make that power that's fine, just let me know. What I don't want is an over-cammed engine.

Re: What cam for street 454?

I'd say look into a Comp Cams- Extreme grind cam profile. With a complete kit you can match your springs to your choice. I've run there .552 -.555 Extreme hyd kit in a 502/450hp with 4spd & 4.10 with surprising results more like 550. So I'd say that would be a great cam for your set up. but go to there site or call em up, Great advice and spot on cam tech.

Good luck

Re: What cam for street 454?

I would go with something in the mid 230 duration @ 50 with around 530-540 lift on a 110 LSA. This will get you where you want to be. It will not be vaccum friendly though, if you are after that. You should see about 440-460HP

How about a Lunati Voodoo camshaft, such as the 60203 ?

Re: What cam for street 454?

Thanks for the advice, I am quite keen on the Voodoo 268 (60203) if I go hydraulic.

But a lot of the threads I've read here recommend a solid camshaft for BBCs like the Comp 280 or Lunati 402A2?

Which is going to make better power and keep some vacuum for power brakes?

Re: What cam for street 454?

Heres what my CC 280's sounds like with headers and super 40's flowmasters and pipes all the way out the back quarters. 454 with 427 crank, steel oval port heads (pretty stock heads just cleaned up and valve springs), and a 4-speed car with a 12-bolt and 373.

It ran very strong but i would guess to say that it had about 450 hp and 400tq... It needed better heads. If i were you i would talk to Harold and have him build you a custom cam for your set up. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/member.php?u=12507

Re: What cam for street 454?

What tranny? Do you plan to swap rear gears soon to the 3.55's? Before you do that, you may want to consider a whole new rear-end. The original 40 year old 10-bolt isn't up to the task of 400+ HP.

Power brakes? A/C? Street and strip? Street only? Weekender or daily transportation?

Give us a few more details and you'll get some good advice.
