Rs/ss 350

Well, I finished replacing just about all the sheet metal on my '67 project and sent it off to got some mud and paint slung on it. So on to the drivetrain. Still looking for the original motor, but in the mean time going to have some fun with a GM crate motor and thought I'd share some photos;


Even with correct motor mounts and steering components, factory pan hits frame


So changed pick-up tube and pan


and painted the block orange


didn't like the valve cover color so


painted them

Great job . Now that is the way GM should have painted those motors in the first place. IMO the only other thing I would change is the breather. Not sure why they make that thing so big?

Not sure I dig the vent breather either, in fact I would rather have period correct valve covers too. Off to the dyno here to do the GM break in:

Did pull a 5800, just to see, pretty typical I guess, I'll take it anyway:-)

Mating it to a TREMEC, only issue was modifying the dust shield, needed larger radius to clear one piece seal design

Hell of a time with pulleys and brackets, but finally got her figured out



In the sub-frame...hey gurus is the HEI going to fit??

I put an HEI in a 69 a long time ago. Not positive, but thought I had to make a slight dent in the firewall. Used a piece of wood and a hammer. Couldnt realy tell unles you knew about the cars. Engine looks awsome . I have a Z now , but a big block looks way cool under the hood.

Very nice torque curve...if you can call it a curve. Now that is what I want in my car, ditch the breather and have period correct valve covers.... what an awesome piece.

Most likely no on the big cap HEI fit. Will be close. Maybe the car to car variance will be in your favor, or maybe you can get enough forward position on the subframe mounting locations as long as you can still get the fender gaps you want. But most times big HEI won't fit without a bit of firewall mod. And even if it just fits, it's got to be able to rotate for timing, etc.
