Question

Hello im new to the boards and i have a question .. PLEASE help me out if you can .. I have a 80 Z28 with a 454 in it .. It has 781 heads and a hyrdraulic roller cam .. The cam specs are 296/306 Lift: .553''/.571'' .. The motor only has 8 to 1 forged pistons ... The heads have been cleaned up , but never ported ... How hard would it be to get this motor to roughly 500 hp ?? Im guessing its somewhere around 400 hp the way it is now ... What would be the cheapest and easiest way to make atleast 500hp ?? The intake is a Edelbrock Torker II .. It also has Hooker Competition headers .. I know with a 454 it wouldnt be that hard to make 500 hp ..

I dont care about gas milage, but i want to keep this motor some what streetable ... I still want to be able to run pump gas... What would be the cheapest way to get me there ??? Just port the heads and drop in a bigger cam ?? If so what cam would you recomend ??

Edelbrock RPM manifold, 10.0:1 pistons, and a little port cleanup on the heads. You'll be there. Those pistons are killing you for that cam the compression is too low.

Different heads to get compression up (mid to high 9's) and should be there.

But since you have 8:1 now,blower perfect ? (600+)

I would love to go with a blower, but dont feel like spending the 3,000 dollars to get there .. If i change the pistons to 10.0:1 what else would i have to change ????? My plan is to change the pistons and go with a bigger cam .. I want to go with the biggest hydraulic roller cam possible and still be able to cruise on the streets ... I will also have the heads ported ..

Please do a search here and over at Team Chevelle for Ed's "BSE" motor combination!!

It pushes his porky, '68 Chevelle, 468 motored car deep into the 10's and is still pretty streetable.

His older combinations are just basic motor building with RESPECT to using just a GOOD combination of not so "balls-out" stock parts and such..

I have two of his combinations if you can't find one if you want to e-mail me at home??

And, yes, I'm a fan of Ed's.. (Even if he can't "keep the peace" on the Boards!!)...

Don't change your heads, do change your pistons.
