Exhaust Difference 68 to 69 Flowmasters

I want to put Flowmaster Super 40 mufflers on my 69 with 2.5" , exhaust tail pipes dropped out to the sides just rear of the back tires between quarter panel and leaf spring.

Flowmaster makes this exact system for a 68, but not a 69.

They do make one for a 69 that is 3".

Does anyone know of other vendors of pipes that would allow me to achieve what I am wanting to do using Super 40s?

Also can someone explain to me the difference in exhaust between a 68 and 69?

Thank you!!!

Re: Exhaust Difference 68 to 69 Flowmasters

As far as the stock differences between 68 and 69, I think it's just the tailpipes and hangers. There's not a lot of room for oversize tailpipes routed like a 67/8, but maybe there isn't for 69 either, IDK. 67/8 were actually flattened from the factory into an oval shape where they exit between the leaf spring and quarter panel.

Be sure to check out Spintech before you pull the trigger on the Flowmasters - they sound amazing!

Yes, I believe the only difference is the 68's dump at the rear leafs and the 69's dump at the rear bumper.

I believe the 40's alone will overbear you on drone . I went with the FloMaster kit 17104K with 2.5 pipes all the way out. It has their FloMaster transverse muffler with heat shield behind the axle. To kill the drone, I added two 3" DynoMax flow thru bullets that mount under the rear seat. 2.5 tail pipes out back. Very super stock sounding system and you can still hear your phone ring.

Not much room for 3" pipes.

Bah! If it's too loud, you're too old lol... I have 40s on my 69 bb and I love them. I wouldn't want them any quieter. It's a muscle car after all.
I couldn't tell you about dropping them out the sides though. That might change things. With mine, it all goes out the rear.

I have super 40's on my Vette with a 383 stroker and I love the sound of them and yes they are loud, but they do not drone. Based on many comments I think the car is much louder outside than it seems inside. They sound great to me.

I just need to figure out a system that allows me to drop them out behind the tire and between the leaf springs...

Yep, old and half deaf and still too loud.

Eh? What you say? Bah, Tinnitus is a miserable mistress. I like the exhaust to drown out the ringing lol

I would think any muffler shop could bend up some muffler back pipes for you.

Re: Exhaust Difference 68 to 69 Flowmasters

Ok I spoke to Ronnie at Flowmaster and he was extremely helpful, much better than the person I spoke to last time. He is very knowledgeable about first gen Camaro and owns two. So if you have Flowmaster questions I highly recommend asking for him.

Basically I understand that I can order the out the back system and I will not install the aft sections and make a small piece to clean up the end.

System should be here on Friday I'm so excited, hopefully I will start the car for its first time in 20 years on Saturday!!!

I believe the rear tailpipe hanger bracket locations are different also. At least they were when I put the 68 style exhaust on my 69 z/28 about 10 years ago.

Can't wait to see it on and hear it, Vetjet!
My '68 goes in for exhaust in about a month! Going with the Flowmaster transverse/crossflow muffler as well.

Re: Exhaust Difference 68 to 69 Flowmasters

Yes you can install a 67/68 Flowmaster kit on a 69, I did it to my old LB 69 years ago. You just have to use the 67/68 tail pipe hangers included with the kit and drill new holes into the frame rails in the 7/8 location. It fits nice and sounds great if you trash the mufflers and replace them with Dynamax Super turbos.

Sorry for the crappy picture, but it's all I have handy at moment..

On the flip side you can install a 69 system on a 7/8 as well, but the fit is not near as good. John was kind enough to give me a 69 system he pulled off a 69 when I was building my old 67 Project and I used it. The 69 tail pipes were very tight between the quarters and leif springs on the 67 and when the car was loaded down they would hit if you hit a dip to fast.
