Re: which alternator do you recommend

Well mine has not run yet, but I converted to a pass. side CS130 alternator from Powermaster, long water pump, using Alan Groves mid mount brackets. I like how it all fits, looks pretty clean.
I also had an engine harness made for me by American Autowire that eliminates the external regulator and puts the alternator wiring on the passenger side. It looks like it came from the factory that way.

I know some guys have had good luck with CS130 and others have not, so we'll see how it goes for me. I believe you just need to have everything exactly right or the alt could fail, but tons of guys have had success with them.

An easy conversion to a 12SI alt would do the trick.

Re: which alternator do you recommend

I swapped to a 10si, 63 amp, internally regulated 3 wire. I didn't need 100 amps, don't even need 63. Just wanted the better idle output of the si series, and my 10dn was toast. Under $50, looks very similar to the 10dn, bolts in. As for part #, I used Mad Electrical's guide, and ordered one for a 1978 Chevy Camaro, 8 cylinder 350 engine with air conditioning. This got me the clocking I wanted for a pass side LWP mount with stock brackets.

Read this...http://www.camaros.net/techref/ftecref14.html

If you want a true bolt in (other than the internal regulator conversion wiring) use a 12SI from a 84 Camaro 305 with 94 amps. It uses a metric top adjusting bolt. Considering the stock alternator is around 32 amps this is a good upgrade.

Re: which alternator do you recommend

I only do as mark w does above, ONLY 12SI, 94 ampere, and, I single wire a stock 3 wire, NOT a fancy "aftermarket 1 wire" disaster. Mine all come from wrecking yards, 10 bucks, usually NO parts needed, just clean, put back together, make the jumper for the number 2 terminal power, and, bolt it up.

I have them running on everything around here, and a LOT of non-GM vehicles.

I NEVER use the CS series alts, even the ones that are supposed to be "updated" with stronger rear end frames, they still kill the alternators from the housing beating out the rear bearing bores.

Re: which alternator do you recommend

It seems some people just do not care to listen.

Look at the rear of that CS alternator in those pictures. See the rear bearing on the rear end frame, IT WILL GET LOOSE IN THE FRAME, because the end frame isn't designed correctly to hold it without allowing it to auger out the bearing bore hole, even on the "revised" end frames.

Learning this by hands-on experiencing it, isn't fun.

Do as you wish, but, I'd go with the 94 amp 12SI, much better alternator.

Re: which alternator do you recommend

pretty sure an alternator from an 84 Camaro is going to be a 12SI.
