Re: camaro ss differential

i haven't a clue what rearend you have, but I will say that if you have a decent engine up around or above 300hp and don't have at least a 12-bolt or a later 8.5, that whatever GM stuck under there is a grenade waiting to go off!

I love it when I find out they hold costs down by designing the drive train so the clutch slips 1st and when you do get it to hook, the sorry-as*d smaller rearend gears flat can't hold the power at hook-up!!

How far off am I guys???????????

Btw, what are they putting in the new 2010 Camaro's big engined IRS??

Re: camaro ss differential

4th gens have a 7.5" diff stock. Any speed shop (local or internet) should be able to supply you with the proper ring and pinion as well as an install kit. Your 6 speed car will have a 3.42 gear stock.

Richmond gears seem to not whine as bad as Motive does but they cost more too.

If you don't have the tools or the knowledge to do this yourself then I'd advise you to take it to a shop. Expect it to not be inexpensive.

Re: camaro ss differential

4th gen Camaro rear ends are not very expensive in the salvage yards. I recommend that you replace the complete rear end instead of trying to rebuild yours. It will be much cheaper and easier to do yourself. Rplacing the ring & pinion gears requires setting the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash to get the correct contact pattern. This is precision work that requires some special tools and lots of patients.
