68 Rear end swap

Hi everyone. I am looking for a rear end to replace my 3.08 non posi, mono leaf axle on my 68 convert. I want to get a 3.55 posi multi leaf 10 bolt. If i cant find one out of a camaro, what are some other makes i can look for. I have heard that some novas are a good choice. Can anybody give me some other makes and years i can look for. Thanks for any help.

Re: 68 Rear end swap

'68 - '79 Nova will bolt right in. '68-'71 used 8.2 10-bolts and 12-bolts. '72-'75 was 8.5" 10-bolts. And '76-'79 they use 7.5's and 8.5's. Just be careful what rear and year and you'll be set. At Pic-N-Pulls you can find a nice core 8.5 10-bolt for under $100 and you can pull a posi carrier out of a truck and then all you need is a bearing kit and someone that can put it all together properly.

Re: 68 Rear end swap

I have 2 of these 8.5 rear ends. I can build one for you or sell you one as is. I don't know what is in them right now, but it doesn't matter becasue they need to be completely rebuilt with new parts.

UHH DONT use the truck carrier or Gov-Lock posi (it will work but breaks easy) find the passenger version eaton OE posi - common like the old Trans am used 73-81

I said posi and wasn't refering to a gov-lock which is a locking diff. Good point though, the one I pulled from a Chevy truck looked like this and is not a gov-lock...

Re: 68 Rear end swap

well i cant view the pic at work only trucks I've found w/o a gov lock posi had been rebuilt woth like an auburn unit. most all trucks came with gov locks from factory from what I've seen - I have torn down dozens of them btw. just dont want him to use a gov lock was my point- they are nicknamed Gov-Pops cause they do explode!

Thanks for the complements on the cars... I don't recall the years but we must have pulled the covers off 6 differentials looking for lower gears, settled for 3.08's but all the trucks had carriers just like this one. Since you can't see it, it's a std GM posi with the big steel S spring that puts pressure on the clutches.

I have NEVER found one of those S spring posis in a truck and I bet I've torn 75-100 or more of them apart! 4x4 usually have lower gears 3.42 are real common 3.73's fairly common and rarely you find 4.10's - usually in the front diff -the gears are the same on the solid axle-87 and older p/u and 91 and older suburbans and the nice thing about taking the front sets as theyre usually like new - but its a PITA to get the axles out -locking hubs, bearings, rotors and all. sorry not to hijack the thread but if your lucky you can find all the parts you need at a pick and pull yard -gears and posi's and put it in the nova housing and get out for 100 bucks or less (I have a 18v impact that I take)and you will be wore out and dirty but then you have cleanup time and finding a old wrench that can put it together for you for a song compared to a9in or 12 bolt hope this helps you out some!
