Two thing wrong, back fire and starter drag. Each can have it's own causes. You need to make sure you're timing it 'in the ballpark' and that your starter is strong. (battery system good-to-go.) Hint; advanced timing is good,,,, until it pings,,, or drags the starter. I'd make sure it wasn't lean, before retarding timing.
