Aloha from Maui 1988 IROC 305 TPI problems

Aloha to all.
Problems with 1988 IROC 305 TPI. Will start some times and run great. Shut it off and it wont restart. Installed new plugs, wires ,dist cap, rotor, coil, TPS, fuel filter, fuel pump relay. Still same problem. Do I have a fuel delivery problem or maybe the ECM? I checked for codes but all I get is the handshake code over and over. When I did the code check with the jumper wire, the electric fan came on the whole time? I'm new to this site and am stoked I found it!!! HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! Aloha, Chris

Re: Aloha from Maui 1988 IROC 305 TPI problems

When commanding ECM into diagnostic mode, all the solenoids/relays activate, i.e., EGR solenoid opens, cannister solenoid opens, IAC seats into its port, and fan(s) comes on.

Listen for f/pump to come on for 2-3 seconds after key is turned to IGN with ECM in normal mode. After key on, then start engine. If ECM receives dist pulses, then f/pump comes on, spark is generated, and injectors are pulsed open.

Since you have no codes, I'd check spark - spark would say dist module is working, check for fuel at rail - see Schrader valve by dist; no spark would say module overheated/broke.

IAC could be remaining open.

Does the engine crank over and not fire or does it not crank over? If it doesn't crank over then the starter is failing.

Re: Aloha from Maui 1988 IROC 305 TPI problems

Thanks for the replies on the problems. The engine turns over fine all the time. It is an intermittent problem. Last night it started right up. Drove around for 30 minutes. Runs great. Come home turn it off try to start it and it just turns over doesnt start. I hear the fuel pump come on but not everytime I turn the key on. I guess I'll check the fuel pressure and volume. Thanks again. Aloha and Mahalo

I had a 3.4L V6 doing the same thing a few months ago.
Turned out to be a shorted Injector.
Car would start fine when cool or allowed to set for awhile, but not if driven and then shut off and a restart tried - like when she stopped to get fuel ...
Fuel pressure was good and pump/filter were fairly new.
Found that by squirting a little starter fluid into the air box the engine would fire for a few seconds - so no fuel was the non-start reason.
Traced to an injector drawing more power when warmed due to internal short.
Unplugging that injector would allow engine to fire right up.

You might want to check the ohm readings of all injectors when cold and warm to see if any are out of range.

Just went out started right up ran for couple of minutes turned her off. Tried to restart and it just turns over. Fuel pump activated upon first start up but not after that. I tried rappin on the tank. Nothing. I'll check all the things everybody has said. Thanks again.

If the distrubutor does not see the pulses it will not let the injectors give fuel. This happened on a truck I had. You could put fuel down the throttle body and it would try to start so I thought the distrubutor was fine. Check your distrubutor module. There is a way to check it with a test light to see if it pulses.

Wink Re: Aloha from Maui 1988 IROC 305 TPI problems

There is a 'watch-dog' timer in the ECM that prevents the fuel pump from multi cycling in the same start proceedure.
If you remove the key and/or bleed of the pressure and retry the pump will come back on again for the few seconds needed to recharge the supply line.
