69 Bumper Guards

Just had my car painted to bring it back to silver from maroon which I had done in the 70's.
The guy who did the job did nt replace the bumper guards say they were a dealer installed oprtion, and don't look so great. When I got the car back it looked like something was missing. Not so sure if I want to put them back. I would love to hear waht you think.

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

Very personal choice really. It's your car.
Can you temporarily place them on the bumper and then step back and see what you think?
It looks good without them.

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

Bob, first off, those bumber guards are not dealer add ons. They are GM factory options (a REQUIRED option for Zs, due to rear bumper height laws). So they need to be there! But pretty sure Z did not get them on the front (this needs validation). If you ordered this option via the order form, you got both from and rears.

So many Z clones omit his and are easy to spot. I hope you got them back from the show, they are VERY expensive to replace! Repros do not fit well and the NOS prices are up there! You will probably have to get them rechromed.

PS the silver is looking great!

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

Thanks Kevin, while reasearching on sticker locations I came upon an old thread that does indeed say that they were there for the reasons you say. They actually are not in bad shape, the rubber pieces need replacing not sure if they are available and I am sure the guy lost the bolts.
Will polish em up and see how they look.

X2...they do offer min protection. Some who don't have them have said they wished they had them, and vice versa. As pointed out a personal choice.

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

Looking for new rubber inserts and polish mine up. Been looking but am confused as to what will fit. Seen Ebay posts that the inserts will fit the front of a 69 and the rears of a 67 and 68. Where there two bumber guards on 69 Camaros? Are the different? Not sure if its ok to post the Ebay listing.

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

Bob, the fronts and rears in 69 are different, not sure if they match a 67 or 68 versions.

they repro the inserts

Here is the wording on the 69 front ones, appears it fits 67-68 rears too! Learn something new everyday

Quote:
Camaro Deluxe Bumper Guard Insert, Front, 1967-69 & Rear, 1967-1968
Reproduction rubber guard insert with steel spine and threaded studs as original. For use with optional Deluxe bumper guard. For 67-69 front guards and 67-68 rear guards.

There were 2 rear bumper guards for 69 Camaro's.
Standard on all 69 Camaro's were short rear "bumperette's".
They extended down from the bottom of the rear bumper. They did NOT have rubber inserts.

Optionally (but standard on Z28 models) you could get the long rear bumper guards. They had the rubber inserts.

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

Bob just get ahold of one of the many site sponsors that sell 1st gen parts and they should be able to get the correct rubbers for your rear guards...

As has been said the rear guards were factory installed on all Z/28's because of the lower stance. They were optional on all other cars as a replacement for the smaller (saber tooth) chrome trim pieces that went below the bumper on each side of the license plate. The plain straight bumper look is subject but most folks leaning toward the stock side don't care for it. It's kinda like not having the body color around the grill, it just looks unfinished.

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

FiNo reason you can't post ebay links.

There were also two different ones used in 69 on the rear. The big block cars got the little bumperettes, that only to below the bumper and have no rubber inserts.
Z/28 go the bigger bumper guards with the rubber insert.

The little ones were standard on every car except the Z/28, not just on big block cars.

Re: 69 Bumper Guards

All Z/28 cars had the rear gaurds on the rear. The gaurds were put on some cars closer to the middle and some cars wider to the outside depending on what mood the person on the line was in. My car is a X-77 . The 77 cars had the gaurds on the back and none on the front. X-33 cars should have the gaurds in the front and the back. Don't know if it is true , but I was told that the Z/28 had the rear gaurds due to the Trans Am race. The cars could be pushed off the track without tearing the rear of the car up. Don't know if it is true, but it made for a good story and made logic to me.
