Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

I have been logging onto ebay with this computer for years, and suddenly I get this error message for the past couple of days:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

More information
This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

I am connected to the internet.
I can go to ebay.com, but this comes up when I click "sign in"
I have cleared the cache and all cookies, reset all ie settings to original, checked to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section, tried another service provider, still the same error.

Ebay is no help, they say it's a browser issue, contact your system administrator. Well you guys are the closest thing I have to a system administrator, any ideas?

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Try another search address and see if it comes up. The link in the address you are trying may no be available any longer.
OR Ask your wife if she figured out a way to block E-Bay so you wouldnt spend all your time and money there.

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

That would be a good trick and she would try it if she could!

I turned the firewall off, so thats not it.

I am able to get there on Firefox (just installed), so my isp is not the problem.

Looks like an ie problem, so I installed ie 8 and have gone from bad to worse. I still can't access ebay sign in, and now ie crashes constantly with this:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

LOL, it gets worse. Now Team Camaro crashes everytime. I am able to move the dialog box down and keep surfing, but the site is missing lots of buttons and features.

I may have to reinstall XP to get this fixed, or just make a permanent switch to Foxfire.

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

James XP sets restore points and lets you restore back to any given day. <Start><Programs><Accessories><System Tools><System Restore> Pick a day from before the problem started and run system restore. You will not loose any data but any program installed after the chosen date will be gone. If nothing was changed from the date chosen to the day you did the restore it will tell you and you can pick another date and restore back a bit further.

If you suspect a virus or trojan caused the problem go to safe boot after doing the restore and run your virus protection and any other security software you use for spyware and trojans before going back to using the PC. This will catch the bad programs stored as data before it gets a chance to install itself again...

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

IE is notorious for corrput profiles.
Quick test - login to your computer with another user account. Create another if necesary, and then test EBAY.. If it works, you can login with another admin account, and delete the profile that was giving you trouble, (C:\documents and settings\<username>

Then when you login again with the same account, it will create a new default profile.
NOTE: tis will also reset all your custom desktop settings, (colors, background, etc..)

NOTE: This will also delete everything stored in the "My Documents" folder which for most is all the data the have saved on the drive. Data is word and excel documents, pictures. music etc. This also includes web shortcuts and program shortcuts.

It's a good tip, just make copies of the folders you wouldn't want to loose so you can replace them in the new profile.

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

After talking to my local computer person (the wife) she recommended what Dennis says.
Go back to a time before the problem started.

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Unfortunately there are no system restore points available. The system restore is enabled, and I used it to restore after a nasty bug a couple months ago, but it has not worked again since then.

There are a few other system bugs and the computer is slowing down a bit, so I think it's time to reinstall XP

On the bright side, I have started using Firefox and it's working well

That's the smartest move you could have made.

Re: Ebay: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Recently I have had trouble like you described and have cured my problem by de-installing the latest Windows Auto-Updates and rebooting. (in the Control Panel, Add/Remove Software, scroll down and look at date stamps)

Later, I went to the Windows Update site and had it re-scan my PC for needed updates and I re-downloaded the updates.

...the above is just food for though. Using Firefox is indeed a bright move!
