67 z28 convertible

Just signed up, began work on my 67 Camaro convertible 2 weeks ago. Purchased when in high school in 1983, rebuilt and repainted way back then, car was stolen in 2003, and actually recovered in 2004.- totally disassembled. (Have pics, but not sure how to post). When recovered, vin tag was replaced. Body is on the rotisserie, so we really going at it. Still very , very solid good car.

My question- should I create a z28 convertible? I will never sell the car, I would not pass it off as "real", just seems like it would be fun to recreate, and have people scratch their heads while looking at it. Thoughts?

It's your car so do with it what you want. That said, if you spend time on the internet or going to shows and cruise-ins and places with other "Camaro" folks be ready for lots of inquisitive and often offensive attention...

there was a first gen Z28 convert .THE ONLY first gen Z28 ever made....i thought it was a 67 but i believe its a 68 Z28 convert. i saw it at Auburn a few years ago ..i remember there were some issues and possibly problems with the paperwork being stolen... at least thats what was talked about at the Auction grounds that weekend
maybe it was Pete Estes that owned that car

would be nice to have been in a postition to have things like that done .

Would Pete Estes special 68 Z-28 convertible have been one of the RPO's 7199 listed? Or it could be actually the 7200th?

Of all the 7199 Z-28s listed in the RPO how many would have been RS?

67 Plain Jane being assembled with 427, 4 spd Muncie, 12 bolt rear with Mosers, 4 wheel discs

There was a guy on here a few years ago that recreated Pete Estes 68 convertible. It was very nicely done and you might find the discussion here with a search. I couldn't find it, but maybe I didn't use the correct key words.

Was able to dig up that "victorysaber" on July 9/2011 thought that he had bought such a Z. From there other related "merged threads" were mentioned. FYI

Well, on a 67 there are no Z/28 markings so it is doubtful someone with little knowledge will recognize a 302 air cleaner sticker and 2 bold stripes as the only indication of a Z/28.

There is a guy here who did the same thing with a 1968 convertible, but took it all the way with correct engine stampings, window sticker, build sheet, POP, everything. He did a great job, but there are few people who think it's just a bit too convincing and are afraid it will one day get passed off as real.

Go ahead and have fun building your car. Do something to make it a bit different. Put big bold 69 Z/28 emblems all over it if you like. I see plenty of cars at shows that where never factory produced.

It would be different and expensive to build. Most of the true z28 parts are on cars. If not and the numbers are correct you will pay a premium for them. Some of the parts are no longer available.

Yeah, don't see the logic behind the thought/passion although would need to get more details on the build. IE; 302 with M21 and a 12 Bolt Posi Rear with 3.73 gears of just the paint scheme of a Z/28? As noted, a better option may likely be an SS clone with either the hockey or Z/28 stripes. My Vert is a real X55 SS, with the Z/28 stripes (SS Badging), although the drivetrain is no longer original. Best

Well, part of the thought process was when the car was recovered, the vin tag was gone, so there needs to be a new one made. The car originally, was a 6 cylinder car. Just wanted to make the drivetrain look like it came with all the right parts to have been a z28. Maybe a factor one off test car. Paint is going to be the paint I did in high school, candy red with black deck stripes. I would not be too concerned on 100% number correct- but would like to be some what close. Think, finding a z28, with 50 years of use and maybe a parts change here or there, but all the signs of a z.
Plus, I've never seen one with these combos- thanks for the links on the other builds, very cool.

You can't "make" a new vin tag. Did the Vin tag get lost or the cowl tag?

IMO it would make no sense to strip parts off a real Z to put on your what could have been creation.

Your car of course but if you go for it be prepared for the laughing and snickering that will come with it.

You can make a replacement vin tag, by going through department of motor vehicles, therefore it would be documented as non original
