View Full Version : 5 speed
softail02 Feb 2nd, 07, 04:43 PM Hi I am sorry if this has been asked before I did a search with 0 results. I want to pull the 4 speed out of my wife 69 and put in a 5 speed. My question is there are tons of 80-90's camaro running around and other car's that have them but I am just not aware of what trannys they are and would they be able to be installed. I floated the 6 speed option but see that they are only good for the LS-lt motors. If someone has answer to this and dont feel like typing IM me and I will call for your good advice.
thank you TEAM CAMARO you guys ROCK

You've been misinformed. Read this thread, carefully: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=98387
softail02 Feb 2nd, 07, 05:11 PM HMMMMMMMMMMM thanks I didnt read that one... maybe I will do a 6 speed then. My problem is there are 4.11 gears in her car. might drop them down to around 3.55:beers:
Will 2000 ss breaks fit on a 69 camaro?
mikes69z Feb 2nd, 07, 05:48 PM Also depends on how much money you want to spend and what your use of the car is... Keep that in mind when making a decision.

You didn't read the thread.
4.11's are great with an LS1 T56, while 3.55's are at the very lower end of being useful with a 0.5 overdrive. With minor variations for rear tire size, you would be turning about 1,350rpm at 60mph with 3.55's and a 0.5 overdrive, and going about 90mph at 2,000rpm. With a 0.5 overdrive and the 4.11's, you'd be turning about 1,560rpm at 60mph and doing about 77mph at 2,000rpm.
JimM Feb 2nd, 07, 07:19 PM That 6 speed trans has 2 overdrive gears. 6th is .5:1 and would be pretty close to great with the 4:11's!
Another really good option is the TKO 5 speeds. A complete kit (for a naul trans car) is maybe $2400 or so, all brand new. It's pretty close to a boltin too.

Jim: I agree if he wanted to go to 3.55's, for example, the TKO would be a great choice and would, as we have beaten to death in the other thread, not require cutting the trans tunnel. The TKO with 4.11's would be a little short in first gear.
BonzoHansen Feb 2nd, 07, 09:24 PM Will 2000 ss breaks fit on a 69 camaro?Short answer, yes. I believe the front brakes can be adapted, you'd have to search. The rears can, as long as they come froma 10 bolt rear and not a 9 bolt rear. There is lots of info on this, do some more searching.
mikes69z Feb 3rd, 07, 07:03 AM Softail,
If you going to mess with your ring and pinion, consider a used Doug Nash.
You can get this in your car with new rear gears for about $1500-$1800. It will have a 10:1 first gear overall and cruise the highway 70mph at 2300RPM
Many folks don't like this trans here because it's "old school" and not quite as strong as a TKO, but it's definately better than a Muncie and they shift great when setup properly.
You'd also have to take into account what you're using the car for - race or just street cruising.

Out of curiosity, what are the gear ratios in your Doug Nash 5 speed and what rear end ratio are you using?
mikes69z Feb 3rd, 07, 11:02 PM Mike,
I have a DNE 4+1 with a 3.27 first gear and of course 5th is 1:1. I use a 2.73 ring and pinion - so it's about 9:1 for first gear - but I like the low RPM highway cruising :-)
I think using a 3.08 gearset will give you 10:1 for first gear. Most people like the 3.08 because they're readily available and you can keep your stronger 3 series carrier. I have a 12 bolt rear with a rather rare 2 series posi for the 2.73 gearset. Since I don't race my car, it's fine for me on the street. Plus, no trans tunnel mods needed, and stock driveshaft. I think it's the easiest of all conversions.
Go Colts!! :-)
