o.k. i needed something to do today so i removed the rear glass from my 69 coupe .the car is painted so it went very slow. the trim needed polishing and the original glass has some deep scratches and i am not going to attempt to save it. i have to small rust holes in each lower corner that i am going to metal epoxy shut and then use eastwood rust encapsulator over all the flanges.the new glass is going back in with butyl tape. my question would be what to use for the filler to fill the channels back up and still be able to get the moldings back in the clips.the factory filler looked like some kind of latex or silicone caulking?

Originally, all 67s, 68s and 69s used a product called Thikol to 'glue' in both the front and rear windows in these cars. If you want the same quality, you need to use urethane and urethane primer.
Using butyl tape isnt even close to doing the job correctly, let alone for safetys sake for butyl doesnt meet MVSS's. :noway:
And what ever you do, dont use silicone. Thats a huge NO-NO. :noway:
When the glass gets glued back in, you 'paddle' the urethane up to the glass and away from the clips.

If you do use the butyl tape on the rear window ( not really a bad thing ), you shouldn't need any other "filler" in the channel. You want water to be able to flow out not get pooled up in there. I have never used any filler with the butyl tape and they do not leak if installed properly. Make sure you press the glass down into the tape all the way around the channel. Use some 3M window channel prep as well to help adhesion.

thanks jim and rjp73 for the help the rear channels were filled with some kind of filler top both sides and bottom i thought maybe from the factory what a mess cleaning it out and even getting the clips off! i wasn't going to put any filler on the top or sides if i don't use a filler on the bottom i was wondering how the water will get out of there?looks like a water trap even with a filler in there i read a past post about using an air hose on it after washing sounds like a good idea

Originally, there wasmt anything in the bottoms of the window opening, thats why they rusted out. I dont remember the part number of it, but 3M made a product that you could put in the bottoms of window openings, so water wouldnt sit in it. If I can find it, I will post it.
