Right now I have a 350 350HP with 2:73's and 25.5 inch tires pushing around 2450 rpm at 65. I was thinking of going with a higher gear and maybe stay with my turbo 350 tranny, but try to keep it on the hiway. From the calculators I figured a 3:42 gear with a 26.5 inch tire comes in at 2894rpm. Do you think this will be ok? I am looking at a 200r4 also, but really want to do the rear first. This gear should work with both right?

The 3.42 gear is very popular and would work great for this. If your Camaro has the original rear end then you will have to replace the 2 series differential that you have now with a 3 series. You might as well go ahead and get a posi while you are at it.

I was thinking of just getting a new 12 bolt or 9" anyway. I just wanted to see if this one gear would be cool for a T350 and an overdrive. I would love to get them both at the same time but $$$$ won't allow me. The T350 I have now shifts great and doesn't leak. My rear clunks from D to R and most of all is a 1 legger!!! It drives me crazy.

Fwiw, I love my 3.31's and it NEVER bothered me to run at 3070 to 3050 rpm at 70 mph with stock about 25.3" to 25.5" tall tires!!

Heck, to save gas, I always dropped down to 60mph on the hwy!! But most of the time's, I was running 80+mph back in my youth!!

M-20 car here tho..

I don't think they make 3:31's anymore in the chevy rear. I think the 9" has gears close to that.

You won't be disappointed with 3.42. For highway (I) think anything below 4.10's are O.K. with me. I can even live with 3.73's.

I would recomend 3.73's over the 3.42's if you plan on an OD trans. I had 3.73's when I installed the OD behind the stroker that makes a lot of low-end torque. I thought the swap to 3.42's would tame the 3.06 first gear in the OD. It didn't really help but it did make it so driving around in OD on city streets lugs the engine if you try to accelerate from 40 - 50 without a downshift. The 3.73's made it possible to just leave it in OD without the lugging. This is with 26" tall tires. Right now my resolve is to drive around town in 3rd and save the OD for the freeway.

The stroker makes power starting at about 1800 rpm and my converter is always locked in OD. If your 350 doesn't make power until 2500 or more you'll likely see what I am talking about even more. This is a very common OD conversion issue and most guys learn the hard way trying to tune out the part throttle pinging and detonation when the engine lugs in 4th at low rpm... Get them to drop it into 3rd at the same rpm and the pinging goes away almost every time...

I have this exact set up in my car ,and for the brief time it was on the road with my old powerglide it pushed about 3000 at 75mph or so...that doesnt sound so bad but it made me cringe a little. And it didnt bother me cause I knew I was gonna go to a 5spd,which is an overdrive deal like a 700R.Point is I wouldnt sweat doing the gear first and the trans second.

I have a 200-4R and 3:42's and l am very satisfied with the performance of it. I was trying to decided between 3:42's and 3:73's but opted to be more conservative. 3:42's were used in the Buick GN's and 3:73's were in the Monti SS'. The trick to lugging is to make sure you get the TVS cable adjusted correctly and a proper governor either from a GN or a Montie SS depending on the rear gear you choose. One other thing to think of is if you want a lockup or not. If you go with a lockup then you will have to wire it with a vacuum switch. You may just go with non-lockup in that case unless you go injected and have the puter control the lockup.

I forgot to mention I have a 25.1" tire now ( 235-60-14 ) and the tire I would like to go to is a 27" tire ( 255-60-15 ) in the rears. during the gear change and also during the 2004r.

(Future)
215-60-15 in front. 25.2"
255-60-15 in rear. 27"

With the calculator I came out with 3068 rpm at 65 with 25 inch tires Turbo 350 and 3.42's / with OD is was 2091 rpm

With the calculator I came out with 2841 rpm at 65 with 27 inch tires Turbo 350 and 3.42's / with OD it was 1936 rpm

I echo what Dennis said earlier. I have a 700r4 and 3.42's as well. I only use 4th gear on the freeway above 50mph. I keep it in 2nd and 3rd around town to keep the engine in the power band and to provide the most fun while driving.
