View Full Version : converter locking and unlocking
ept000 Feb 8th, 07, 09:05 PM Sorry, this is not on my Camaro, but my 1995 GMC 1/2 ton pick-up with a 350 and a 4L60E auto transmission and about 105,000 miles. The problem is when I'm on the freeway at 65 mph, and I lift off the throttle for a few seconds, then push the throttle back down to where it was, the converter seems to unlock for a few seconds. At cruise the motor turns 2050 rpm, then when I breathe the throttle, the motor jumps up to 2200 or 2250 for two or three seconds, then back down to 2050 rpm. It does this every time. This happens on flat ground, just trying to maintain speed. I'm not mashing down trying to pass or anything, just the normal on and off of the throttle in light traffic. I recently changed the fluid and filter, and nothing was out of the ordinary. I have the B&M three position shift controler spliced into the computer harness, but I only use it when I am towing. So.... Why do you guys think this is happening?:(

Vintage 68 Feb 9th, 07, 04:40 PM Okay, I called my cus and asked for Service Bulletins on it ...
Has the dealer checked it against these two (2) Trans
related bulletins for your year of vehicle #677157 and #677163 ???
They both pertain to Torque converter and require updates to the PCM.
It's a start ...
You might also want to check out www.drivetrain.com in 'Vegas.
A call to these guys may give you some other things to look for.
400bird Feb 9th, 07, 04:56 PM they also tend to have a problem with the mass air flow sensor getting dirty and sending false reading which causes some problems, most noticeably trans issues
if you have a k&n or any other oiled filter, not just a paper one this tends to make it worse, but at 100K+ it could still be the problem
Powered By Winchester Feb 9th, 07, 04:57 PM Have you tried having it serviced yet? I'd start by changing the strainer inside then have the system flushed. Old/broken down trans fluid can cause the symptoms you described. You should be able to have both done for about $150 or less depending on your geographical status. The strainer you could do in your driveway, the flush would have to be done at a fastlube or alike service shop. Be SURE they know what they are doing though.
ept000 Feb 9th, 07, 05:46 PM Hey Vintage 68, I have not been to the dealer, do you have any info on those two bulletins, or do you know where I can look them up?
400bird, the MAP sensor I assume taks the place of a mass air flow sensor. I have not checked that. what other symptoms might I have is there is a problem with the MAP sensor?
Winchester, I have recently serviced the transmission and there was nothing out of the ordinary. Fluid was slightly dark, but still red and not burnt. No metal particles, shavings or chunks in the pan, or stuck in the filter. Very uneventful.
Thanks guys, keep them coming!
1stgenCR Feb 9th, 07, 07:55 PM Uh I'm not sure I understand the problem fully? My 92 Chevy and my friends 90 Chevy always unlock when you let the gas off. As soon as you apply throttle the converter locks within a second or two unless you mash the throttle.
red67camaro Feb 9th, 07, 08:04 PM I agree with 1stgenCR. This sounds like normal operation.

Strange, mine just started doing it a few thousand miles ago. It used to stay locked so if you were at say 2100 rpm and you let off then back on, it would go right back to 2100 rpm. Now it jumps up a couple of hundred rpm's for two or three seconds.
