View Full Version : Torque Converter
sizzlnz Feb 8th, 07, 10:31 PM I HAVE A 68 WITH A 454 AND A 700 R4 AND WANT TO PUT A CONVERTER IN ! Does anyone have any suggestions on recomended lock up speed .
The car has 12 bolt 323 rear gear and i do lots of hwy and i mostly just want a better iddle at stop lights ???
BlackoutSteve Feb 8th, 07, 10:41 PM A lot more information about your engine, trans & tire size is needed to recomend a converter speed, -mainly camshaft details.
If you just want a converter that will give you a little better performance off the line without going nuts, a 10", 2500 is a safe bet.

Not only do you want to put a converter in, you will have to put one in because it isn't going to work without one. If you are driving the car, you already have a converter installed.
The lockup on a 700R4 is independent of the converter, it is controlled by a solenoid that can work in many ways.
sizzlnz Feb 9th, 07, 09:00 AM The guy i bought the car from ( off this site) said ther was no converter in it but he said he should have put one in ! I just want to stop the clunking when i put it in gear ! And have a more steady idle ! The tires are 24 in tall and are on 16 in rims and i am not sure of engine specs but it feel like 450 hp !
Yellow68SS Feb 9th, 07, 05:59 PM Can we get him to chime in? or send a PM? There is just no way to be accurate in a converter recomendation without knowing the engine specs along with the rear gear.
Other wise you would just be guessing and throwing parts, time, and money at it.
It will be well worth geting the right one the first time.
fastercar68 Feb 10th, 07, 01:05 AM I think when your guy said, "I should have put a converter in it" he meant a higher stall speed/higher dollar converter. Something other than stock, maybe?
I have a zz383 in front of a 700r4 with a 3000rpm (tight) non-lockup converter. Anything less would not be worth the effort.
sizzlnz Feb 10th, 07, 08:37 AM THANKS
That was what i ment when i said no converter it has a stock one that does not slip !
TJS69 Feb 10th, 07, 09:53 AM How is your Gas mileage ? With that high (low numerically) of a gear ratio, your RPM must be too low at Highway speeds. I know you probably have good take off, with the low 1st gear in a 700r4. I would shoot for about 1800 to 2000 RPM at highway speeds.
sizzlnz Feb 10th, 07, 03:58 PM Is ther such a thing as good milage with a 454 ? i think i get 12 miles per imperial gallon . I think the car is geared to low I like to feel the engine pulling
and on the highway i end up driving a little to fast . the car needs a tac i love the stock look and i have not seen one i like .
TJS69 Feb 10th, 07, 08:51 PM I don't think you are running enough RPM's. You have to think backwards when you are talking about gearing. A 4.10:1 ratio is low. (high numerically). A 2:73 is a high gear (low numerically). So, your gearing is too high. With the 700r4, I would think a 3:42 or 3:73 Ratio is about what you want. Large stall torque converters for a 700r4 are expensive. Without knowing what cam is in your engine I would say a 2500 stall. I would change the gears before the torque converter though. Most of the repo houses carry replacement tachs, that you can install in your own dash.
