hello, all. i just went 'overkill' on my cooling and have some of the highest quality stuff on my '69, but i'm not sure what temp i should set my spal fan controller. i'm sure i have a 180 stat. the radiator is a ron davis (work of art!) with a trans cooler and dual spal fans, with a spal fan controller and secondary relay. the first fan kicks on at the first preset temp at half speed, and when reaching the second preset temp, they both kick on full-speed. lets just say this set-up could bring the temp in hell down a few degrees! the fan controller is supposed to come from the factory with a default setting, but to my dismay, the fans would not kick on at all when i first installed it. i thought is was a bad part at first, but i went ahead and tried to set the temps myself, and the unit has worked flawlessly since. i am using 160 as a starting point for the single fan/half speed and 180 for dual fan/full speed. the car will NOT get over 186 in the hottest conditions. on the highway at 80mph and 3000rpm (thanks to no overdrive and 3.25 gears), the engine is around 160-170's. is this too cool? i have the ability to cool, but how cool do i want it? the engine is a sb 383, th350 trans, aluminum high flow water pump, aluminum heads and intake. btw, the ron davis radiator is a big block size. also, the temps i'm stating are based off of the mechanical gauge in the car which gets it's reading from the left cylinder head. the fan controller is using a seperate sender on the forward edge of the intake manifold, fyi. thanks in advance for any recommendations.
