I posted a 8.2 vs 8.5 10 bolt question the other day.
I have 8.5 & found what I now know is a 8.2 from a 68 chevelle.
This chevelle rear has summer brothers axles (high performance?)with a 4.11 posi unit inside.(at least this is what I was told) I did notice the threadded wheel studs were unusally long!
I didn't have time to tear into it today, but I will tomorrow.I havn't bought it yet. He said he was running a small block putting out 400 hp & this 8.2 was holding up to it.
I found a 68 camaro 8.2 houseing to put the guts of the chevelle rearend in.
If this really does have high performance axles then the carrier might be beefed up to.
Would this be as strong as a stock 8.5 with the same stock componets and the same gear raitio & a posi carrier ?
Thanks for everyones help with my never ending project.

Summers Brothers was the biggest name in after market axles at one time. The '68 Chevelle axles will be toolong for a '67 to '69 Camaro housing. The 8.2 will not be as strong as an 8.5 built equal because of the pinion bearing size and the ring gear diameter. If the 8.2 is built right it will be strong enough for 400 HP.

Wow...I think your right!
I measured the chevelle axle at about 54 " this morning, & I just measured the 8.5 nova rear (out of my 69 camaro project) & got about 53" to 53 1/4 from backing plate to backing plate.
If this really is a hot 8.2 out of the chevelle, are there any other options to mount it in my camaro?
Changing the mounting brackets or something?... or is just scrapping the whole idea a better plan?
Also...someone told me the stock posi units from GM were known to frequlentily blow up (they called them governor style posi units & nick named them "grenade" style units)
Is the stock GM units really that bad?
Thanks...Tom

The Governor Lock was used in trucks, not cars. The stock posi in the 8.2 10 bolt was an Eaton posi. It wasn't quite as strong as the new Eaton posi, but it was stronger than the Gov Lock. The 8.5 10 bolt got the Traction Lock most of the time. There were a few of them that got the Eaton and some got the Auburn, but those were rare.
You can put the Chevelle rear end in your Camaro by welding on Camaro spring perches and setting the offset on the wheels correctly to fit under the car. The spring perches are $80 a set.

I can send you a set or you can get them from Moser Engineering. They are $80 plus shipping.

I think I'll stick with the 8.5 from the nova (the rearend that was already in there)
It sounds like a better option.
Thank you all for your response...Tom
