View Full Version : Dex-Cool class action lawsuit
mbrekke Feb 14th, 07, 02:21 PM Received a letter the other day about the Dex-Cool thing making it to 'class action status'. Anyone else receive one? It's in the beginning stages, so there were no details about compensation if the lawsuit were to be won.
edit:
"The lawsuits allege that Dex-Cool forms a sludge-like substance in these vehicles which clogs cooling systems, causing them to overheat, and that Dex-Cool corrodes all parts of the engine it comes in contact with including the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets. The suits further alleges that Dex-Cool not only does not perform as promised, but also causes premature and costly engine repairs to consumers' vehicles."

madmax87 Feb 14th, 07, 02:28 PM No, wish I had. Maybe they will replace my $600 radiator and head gasket that it ruined. No where on the bottle does it say it needs to be in a closed loop system.
Whats the lawsuit about?
mbrekke Feb 14th, 07, 02:38 PM Apparently there is a federal suit along with several state suits. I edited the first post with details of the suit.

rojo Feb 14th, 07, 02:49 PM I removed it from my '02 Impala. Replaced it with the newer "mix with either or" stuff. I still get a little sluge forming around the cap but nothing like before. Supposedly air contact is the culprit but I never could find a leak of any kind. I think I'll flush it again this spring.
67FREAK Feb 14th, 07, 03:20 PM these gaskets are made out of plastic, what happens to plastic when you you repeatedly get it hot and cool down thousands of times? it gets brittle and brakes easily. the failure we see on these gaskets is exactly that, they crack. the dex cool does not cause this (in my opinion)... they need to make the gaskets out of a different material. I have seen these gaskets fail in the 3.1 (same gasket material) in the days before dex cool came along.
jr68 Feb 14th, 07, 03:54 PM Ive lost intake manifold gaskets in my 98 Chevy truck and in my Daughters 99 Chevy Blazer , both have Dexcool.

Whats the lawsuit about?
The only one who will get a new radiator will be the attornys filing the lawsuit. Been through that with Lumina rear brakes. By the time they take their cut there's nothing left.
dawg Feb 14th, 07, 04:17 PM yeah attorneys are the only one benifitting from us low life goobers!
I say time to sue the lawyers for taking all our money!
or at least hang a few of them so the message gets out lol.
novaderrik Feb 14th, 07, 04:42 PM i wonder what lawyer would file the lawsuit that sues all the other lawyers for taking all the money?
would they file a counter suit?
if you are getting sludge in you Dex Cool filled system, check the cap...
3SuperSports Feb 14th, 07, 05:03 PM The suit also stated that GM replaced bad gaskets with the same problematic gaskets even though they new they were bad......GM denies it.
edd Gordon Feb 14th, 07, 06:05 PM Class action suits have always made the big time Lawyers big time money while the people that have had the problems get Peanuts It has always been that way and will most likely stay that way. There has been only a few Smokers who collected from Cigarette companies and most Cigarette Companies have made settlements by placing Don't smoke ads as part of their settlement which actually is advertisement for them. These are only My observations maybe not actually facts just incase a Lawyer wants to sue Me. I used Dexcool in My 69 502/502 Chevelle and it ate the intake gaskets in less then a few months or so.
camaroman3 Feb 14th, 07, 08:33 PM I had a 98 blazer. had to replace radiator, water pump, heater core, and also all hoses and flush engine. did all this myself or it would have really been expensive. then replaced dex crap with prestones new formula. when all this was going on i read alot about this stuff. there were people that changed there heater core 3 times before finally flushing and replacing dex crap. in about a 6 month period. i read in some places that chevrolet new of the possible problems of this before using it. i know a guy that works for a local school in there maintenance vehicle department. they have 10 blazers in the 98 range. had trouble with all of them.
p.s. i will be looking for my letter. i filled out about ten petitions with my name and address online. also to go along with this i had the same trouble on this blazer that i had with my 95 chevy truck wind shield wipers. my truck had a recall. when my blazer did the exact same thing i called chevrolet. they said no recall. told them about my truck and i had 5 chevys now but i guess my next would not be. they changed there story real quick and paid for the part. i put it on. they made a mistake and should take care of it. you can not compare todays dex cool to the original dex crap. sorry to be long winded but i think you know how i feel now.
mbrekke Feb 15th, 07, 09:19 AM I actually got a couple thousand bucks out of a class action suit that was brought against a hospital corporation that owned the hospital I worked at for a time. They were 'missusing 401K funds' and had to compensate the employees. It was free money as far as I was concerned.
I agree though. GM car owners might get a free 'flush and fill' out of this at best.
