: Fiberglass Evaporator Case Refinishing???
jweb4747 Feb 14th, 07, 08:08 PM I would like to make my GM fiberglass evaporator case look better but can't seem to find any information on coatings or refinishing for these. Is there anything made for this? I saw a post where someone used John Deere Blixt Black but I can't find anything on it. I would hate to replace it just because it has a bad looking section on the engine side. Thanks for any help. JW
click Feb 15th, 07, 08:04 AM Many of us used the John Deere Blixt Black... I washed it with Dawn dishsoap to get grease off, then several rinses and air dried in the sun, then sanded with the redish 3M sanding pads, lightly, then 2 coats of Blixt Black.
Here are before and after pics

jweb4747 Jul 19th, 07, 09:55 AM Can anyone here tell me if the evaporator case (engine side only) on a 69 factory air car can be removed individually from a working system in order to repair a crack/hole? If so, how difficult and any pointers? Thanks
Mark C Jul 19th, 07, 10:07 AM Yes, the case can be split apart and the inner peice removed. there are two studs that come thru the firewall behind the passenger side head that need to have the nuts removed, and there are probably 5 or 6 hex headed screws that hold the two case halves together located around the joint between the inner and outer halves. The case also has a seal made of dum-dum between the two halves that may make it tough to pull them apart, but they will come apart.
click Jul 19th, 07, 10:10 AM Yes it can come off by itself but its a fibreglass type product and mine was cracked and melted so badly from hittting exhaust by previous owner, I bought a used replacement on ebay and cleaned it up and painted with John Deere Blixt Black spray bomb paint. Turned out very nice.

jweb4747 Jul 19th, 07, 10:45 AM For some reason, they appear now. That looks great. Where can the paint be bought? I did a search for it after my original post and couldn't find any. Also, do you know if the engine side can be romoved from a drivable car and any pointers/difficulty? Thanks a bunch. Joe
click Jul 19th, 07, 10:55 AM John Deere paint is found at John Deere dealer only.
I removed mine while it was still all together in the engine bay. Mark gave you the bolts to look for, my pics show some of them. It comes right off with just a little wiggling.
jweb4747 Jul 19th, 07, 11:24 AM OK, one more thing. Do you think it's worth taking off to repair a hole/crack and are the studs on the interior hard to get to?
click Jul 19th, 07, 11:59 AM Its worth fixing as the heat from the exhaust is now getting into your car as are smells of burning oil or what ever is stinky in the engine bay. The interior studs probably wont need to be reached, the nuts come off on the firewall side in my case. :)
jweb4747 Jul 19th, 07, 01:38 PM Got as far as I can go for now...looks like the tube header on that side has to come off.
BTW: I called several J. Deere dealers and no one knows what it is. Maybe I need to call a AG dealer... Thanks

jweb4747 Jul 20th, 07, 01:35 PM Thanks a bunch. Just got a reply from J. Deere's site. Got the same part number from them. I was about to make sure you used the simi gloss because it's offered in gloss also. Now to see if any of my local dealers have/can get it. Thanks again.
BTW: I posted the same thing on Eastwood's site a month or so ago and as of my last visit, no one there answered. I thought they would surely carry something for this application.
