I have a 68 with a 454 and just installed a addco 1" sway bar this past week end. The problem is when I hit a medium/large bump the tires scrub just for a second and the stop. I know I could change the springs but I really like the way the car sits. Can I just install some stiff shocks to help this issue? I have the 15" torque thrust II wheels. The tire rub is on the outside edge and hits the lip of hte wheel well when I hit a bump. Currently have stock type shocks, not really sure what type but they look like a standard type shock. I there a stiffer shock that I can use to reduce the front end travel when I hit a bump. The car was an original 6 cly car and probably has the softer springs, but again I like the higth the car sits. What type shocks would help?

How about smaller tires? Wheels with a different offset?

Shocks dont hold up car springs do.If you can find a set of coil over shocks they will work. Or try to roll the wheel lip in a little. The tires may do this for you if you let it go long enough BUT may cut your sidewalls up too.

Do you have the wheel well trim installed?

"technically" the tires shouldn't rub the fender even if your springs collapsed and shocks broke. The bumpstops would keep that from happening. Once on the bump stops, that's all the travel it's got. the factory set it up not to rub. The wheel/tire combo is the key... if the bumpstops and control arm and frame bushings are up to par.
Otherwise changing the height/stiffness works but is a coverup until "that one bump"... you know which one ;)
Or lenghten your lower bump stops....

I dunno why it started with the sway bar. Maybe it's holding tension down...

BTW, if my personal springs collapsed and shocks broke, my fatass tires would be in all kinds of trouble, front and back. They don't like "that one bump" however i describe it at the time ;)

I agree, look at your wheel offsets first.

What are your alignment settings?
Often an increase in neg camber can help move the top of the tire in aprox 1/2" or more! Increased tire wear on the inner edge is the downside but if you have stock alignment camber setting of .5 deg positive, you can easliy tolerate .5 deg negative, and this will move the tire in a lot.

Some lowered Camaros have too much angle on the anti-roll bar arms, and they can hold the car down. Check your bar arms, they should be close to level with weight on the front end. Camaros that are lowered a lot, can't have the arms perfectly level because shortening the end links that much would result in another type of bind.

If the tires only rub slightly, they may actually only be rubbing on the bolt heads that attach the fenderwell to the fender. If this is the case, you can try replacing the stock bolts with "button head" bolts which have a much smaller and smoothly rounded head with an allen socket. These solved this same rubbing problem problem on my car and several others here. You can't get these at just any hardware store, but a commercial bolt place should have them.

68SSConvet,

I think you may have it, my tires are hitting the bolts that hold the fender well to the fender, I will try some iof htese bolts and see how they work out. Thanks!!!!
