: Correct battery cable location?
z28doug Feb 20th, 07, 10:39 PM Bought some of the "correct" spring loaded battery cables and have a question. My negative cable currently grounds to a thermostat housing stud. I have been looking a what are supposed to be "correct" engine bays and have noticed some of the negative cables are grounded to the alternator bracket. Did Van Nuys and Norwood do it differently or is one way correct for both?
Thanks for the help,
Doug
RamAirDave Feb 20th, 07, 10:46 PM As far as I know, its supposed to be on the thermostat housing stud, which is also where the alt bracket attaches.
I am not aware if the VN cars were done differently.
z28doug Feb 20th, 07, 10:53 PM Thanks Dave,
I've seen several lately bolted to the hole on the alternator bracket right next to the heater hose clamp hole.

Looking at pics of Van's original VN Z, it is bolted in the location you are speaking of. Maybe the VN cars were done that way.
Maybe he'll chime in to say if it still has the original battery cables.
z28doug Feb 20th, 07, 11:09 PM Dave,
I've got the same picture. Shouldn't the heater hose bracket be bolted in the hole that is the closest to the back edge?
Doug
RamAirDave Feb 20th, 07, 11:17 PM From what Ive seen on NOR cars, the bracket is bolted to the rear hole, the harness clip in the hole just forward of that.
As far as VN cars, I dont have much experience with them and their intricacies.
These are the two best pics I have of a NOR car at the time:

The few survivor examples of NOR cars that I have pics of are the same. Vans car is different.
rszmjt Feb 21st, 07, 02:04 AM Pretty sure that Norwood and Van Nuys cars mounted the negative cable in the same place on the stud, otherwise GM would have had quite a few different negative cables depending on the battery option and mounting position. The parts book does not list battery cables for different production plants also. JMO.
My RSZ28 has original cables and the negative mounts on the stud, it is a Norwood Car. It also does not use the clamp for the heater hoses, it is 06A.
I have a friend who has a LA Z28 and it is also on the stud, not 100% sure it is original.
I think 70,s mounted the cable on the bracket?
Unreal Feb 21st, 07, 04:37 PM I know you are talking s/b, but thought I'd note that the b/b bolted directly to the block down near the fuel pump.

The negative cable goes on the stud from the thermostat housing that protrudes through the hole in the alternator bracket. Period. Doesn't matter which plant built the car.
ChevyThunder Feb 23rd, 07, 06:39 PM The engine in my Van Nuys Z was rebuilt shortly before the car was stored so I am sure it was probably common that the neg cable was not attached to the original location in such situations, the case with my car.
z28doug Feb 25th, 07, 03:04 PM I just went and looked at my friends same family VN pacer. This is a low mile, virtually untouched car. There was no heater hose bracket on the alternator bracket. The negative battery cable attached to a clamp in the second hole from the back and grounded at the thermostat housing stud. This is identical to my VN car. More food for thought. I know things can be changed in 38 years.

William Feb 25th, 07, 03:14 PM The heater hose clamp was not always used. Vintage magazine engine bay photos show some have it; some do not. Camaros that do not have a plastic ty-wrap retaining the heater hoses and alternator harness.
