For the paint experts out there?
Is it too late or is there a product or process avialable to target paint that appears to be drying out underneath the clear coat. It is happening to a couple places & it looks like 'chicken scratch' or scarring especially appearant under light or sun. I've tried high end polishes & waxes havn't been brave enough for the compounds especially if it can't help. Thanks in advance.

It hard to say without seeing it. Where are you from (what state) if your in Rochester MN E-mail an adress or phone # and I'll come by and check it out. Was the paint cracking before you had it painted? If its not on the surface, you won't be able to polish it out.

Austin; thanks for the reply. I am in New York/thanks for the house call offer. Unfortunetly my problem is under the surface or under the clear c. I have seen 'clear coat polishing compound'#7 but I don't know the logic or process behind it-thanks agian

Joe, it sounds to me like it could be clear coat delamination. Does the area appear whiteish? If you have a problem with color that is under the clear, no compound can help you, because you would have to rub the clear off to get to the paint. Does it appear only on the top panels or on the tops of body lines?

Interesting question! Because there is a sense of consistency there . Lets see; it appears mostly on top fenders next to hood but not anywhere on hood & same for trunk & a very small trace in front of 2 of 4 tires.

Joe, one thing comes to mind, the clear was rubbed thin in these areas. Commonly the hood and deck lid would be opened when the tops of the quarters or fenders are rubbed. It is very easy to "bare down" and cut more than anywhere else, especially near the edges. This MAY be an answer. Of course without a mil gauge to measure the paint there, it is a educated guess. It also could be that it was painted disassembled and there was more base applied to the tops of the fenders and quarters (another common mistake) and there was solvent trapped between the base and clear.

I did a '69 Mustang that had the problem MARTINSR talked about. The car had been redone (they did a very nice job) but must have over sanded and polished, and the clear was starting to delam on the hood, roof, and trunk. If this is the problem make sure to sand off all the clear coat from the body lines up to be safe. This car made it over 3 years before showing any signs of a problem.
