i have to change out my rt sidecowl. i have a couple of questions. has anyone worked with this type of replacement piece?

im thinking of just replacing the lowerpart at the front seam. so ill have to cut this down. where the car is now i only have 110 for electricity. are those little welders any good for this type of project?

any other ideas?

Yes a 110 mig will work fine use .024 wire. You could just patch the rust, but since you have the new outer section. I would take the outer skin off the cowl and look to see what the inside looks like. If the inner part looks okay then, I would put the outer cowl side on.

thanks for the info. both the front and the side are wiped out. i was just going to cut the lower half of the front and side, then patch in some new metal. i figured that was all it needed.

after looking a little bit better i found out that there is a "bottom" in there thats gone too. i didnt know that there was another lower piece in there. i though the side and front ran to the botton witout any seperation on the inside.

thats why i was asking about the whole side peice in the first post. i firgued i could cut that down so as to still just fix the lower portion. this way i will also have the inside "bottom" piece with it.

im getting ready to take the front end apart and remove the frame this weekend. i hope i can get that all done. then, while thats away getting cleaned up, i was going to get to the rusted cowl.

thanks again gene sc

What does your lower rear fender mount look like. My outter cowl sections were like that and the rear lower fender mount was rusted out as well and I had to find a donor car to get that section cut out of. Also its not to bad of a job with using just half of the section as you planned since you dont have to mess with all the spot welds around the curved section on top and then you save the partial VIN as well if your doing both sides.

By the way you do know that once its apart with the front end off you will find more you would like to do right :D I was just going to do some minor repair and took my 68 apart and its still apart, always something else you figure might as well do while its apart, Just part of the was us Camaro folks are :)
