View Full Version : New headers fit great!
Just bolted up a set of Summit's coated 1 5/8" long tubes and they fit GREAT!
I had Hedman 65003's and they were nice headers but I have straight plug heads so pipes 3 & 5 were right onto of the plugs with my AFR's. So...I picked up a set of these coated Summt 1 5/8" and they fit killer. Tons of clearence around the steering box and both are tucked up tight to the body.
And to top it off...$178 coated to the door! So if anyone with a smallblock and straight plug heads looking for a good fitting set of headers...here ya go.
Strick Mar 4th, 07, 11:18 PM What is the part #?
Thanks!
67CamaroD Mar 5th, 07, 02:52 AM Congrats on the purchase. I spent almost $400 on my supercomps, but I have angled plugs so who knows if they would fit.
RickD Mar 5th, 07, 05:38 AM And the header ports match your AFR's ok? Good to hear about a set that fits. Congrats!
Granny's 69 Mar 5th, 07, 07:28 AM Congrats 6D9!
I have a set of Summit's Ceramic coated 1&5/8" longtubes myself. The fit is very good with my stock heads. I have good stearing box clearance & I didn't have to beat or dimple the headers! I give em' a thumbs up too!
Cal69 Mar 5th, 07, 09:00 AM Great timing. I just installed a set myself and ran it down to the muffler shop last Friday to have new collectors welded up (drove it down open header too, but that's another story).
I couldn't be more happy with the fit and look (especially for the low price). I am running them on a SBC with Edelbrock RPM heads and they fit even better than the Hooker comps they replaced. They clear all plugs (I'm running the straights), and there is plenty of room on the steering box. Only place room was tighter is by the oil filter. I think I'm running a Fram PH2.
They are Dynomax Cyclone headers, no doubt about it. Summit is selling them as their house brand for much less. Only problem I had was less room for the clutch return spring, but I fabricated a bracket & everything is working out great.

I just installed these as well - for the money you can't beat them, they some casting blems but nothing that shows once bolted up and not affecting fit or performance.
Mike68RS Mar 5th, 07, 10:39 AM Can one of you guys post a picture of the drivers side collector to see how far down they hang from the floorboards?

matty4949 Mar 5th, 07, 02:36 PM THis doesn't have much to do with your headers, but I'm new to all this restoration thing and I've posted a question that I was wondering if you could take a look at.
It reads "Can someone help me with my pre oil problem?" and it's the one right after your post. If you get a chance or if someone else reads this that can look at it for me, I'd really appreciate it. It's my first car I've ever restored (or tried to). Thanks!
rojo Mar 5th, 07, 02:50 PM .......and both are tucked up tight to the body.........
So the drivers side isn't closer to the ground than the passenger? Does it look like these would work with a lowered car?
The part# is like posted below..SUM-G9001-9. As far as port match to the exhaust ports I did not check real close but it looks pretty good. I am planning on cutting off the 3 bolt collectors and welding on the Flowmaster ball&cone style. So..I will check how they look then. As far as ground clearence goes its great...my car is lowered 3" and it tucks up nice. The headers hang the same unlike Hookers.
rojo Mar 5th, 07, 03:52 PM Sounds great, thanks for sharing.

With your car lowered 3", how much ground clearance do you have at the collector?
I was set on the Thorleys, but if these fit just as good, I'd save a bundle, since the Thorleys are $525.
A picture would be great! We'd love to see them?

$178.00 Headers and $10.90 Shipping.. Nice find ! You can't go wrong for that !
I asked because I was caught up in the Jeggs "Free Shipping" deal where they charge you $24.99 for Picking and Processing :( on a $100.00 part. I like Summit over Jeggs
Kev
Lost in the 60's Mar 5th, 07, 04:31 PM Kev, I've rarely been charged a shipping cost from Summit...only when the carton gets a little big, like the headers, do they charge a small shipping cost. I've never seen a "picking/packing" charge from them. I've always been impressed when buying from Summit...
Black Z Mar 5th, 07, 09:04 PM Pictures to show ground clearance for us with lowered car would be great? Post them if you have them. Thanks
Well...I cut the 3 bolt collectors off today and plan to weld the new Flowmaster ones on in the morning. When I get everything installed I will try and get some pics up for you guys. I will also get measurments from the collector to the ground. Who can I e mail the pics too...??

How do you know for sure, I would think they were Dynomax Blackjack Headers if anything?
67CamaroD Mar 6th, 07, 03:40 AM I have to know. I just checked my summit receipts and every one of them show a $9.95 handling fee and the last one was $10.95. Even if it is just one $10 part. Am I the only one that is paying this?

Darren the old Summit handling fee was $9.95. Now it is $10.95. Read their policy here: http://www.summitracing.com/customerservice/Support.asp?target=support.summitracing.com/scripts/rightnow.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3342&p_created=1130510796&p_topview=1

cambird68 Mar 6th, 07, 07:30 AM I just spent last weekend putting in ( 5 times) headers. I had to bash the tube by the steering. I wish i would have known. This will def. be on the list for the next project. I am running World Products heads with staight plugs. I wish you would take some pics please.
Cal69 Mar 6th, 07, 08:19 AM I have a buddy who has the Dynomax Cyclone coated headers on his '68. These Summit headers are identical to those, right down to the flanges and bends. Others here have also posted that the Summit phone reps have disclosed that Dynomax makes the headers when asked. I could be mistaken and they are the Blackjack headers instead of the Cyclone, but it's tough to tell.
OK guys sorry for the wait. I got the new collecotrs installed and the headers are in as well. First off..Summit did charge me 10.95 for shipping. Next..install went sweet. Passenger headers drops right in from the top. The drivers side header needs to go in from the bottom. Total install on these babies maybe 15 min. Getting to a couple of the plugs in a pain but not to bad. Boot clearence is great as well as ground clearence. I have 4.75" of clearence from the ground to the lowest part of the collector. I also e mailed Mike68RS the pics to be posted. Thanks guys!
Black Z Mar 7th, 07, 01:20 AM Send the pictures to bryanw80@netscape.net also if you can. Thanks

Black Z Mar 7th, 07, 09:57 AM Good thing there is another header for us that have lowered cars. Thorley Tri-Y's 376Y1C went up another $80+ this week at Summit:

Mike68RS Mar 7th, 07, 10:41 AM I ended up buying the Thorley 376y-c from http://www.autoanything.com/ for $515. shipped with this 10% off coupon code EMA07006.
The Summit headers don't seem to tuck up much better than my Hedmans and I have less than 3" ground clearance at the collectors with Global West springs up front.
Here is a pic of the Thorleys I got from another site.
For a lowered Camaro, you can't do much better than Thorleys, other than shorties, which will not work with a manual trans.

Mike, how long did it take to recieve your Thorkey headers from the day you ordered. Thanks for the discount code, I think I will oder from them also. How much ground clearance do you have at the lowest point of the header? Do you have any pictures of your car on the ground to see the header clearance? Thanks

I hope they are not the flowtechs. I had to dimple my flowtech headers to clear my power steering box as well as to give my boot to spark plug 3 room. The rest of the wires run fine with plenty of clearence. It was also a PITA to get the driver side header up there too. Had to remove part of the Z-Bar to slide that puppy up there.
Im just running the non cermaics for now until I get my engine broke in and everything running good, then am planing on swapping them out. I too was dead set on the Thorleys but saw this post. If they arent Flow Techs or the clearence issues have been resolved then I am up for saving $300+
My car has 2" drop Hotchis springs in front and 3" DSE springs in the rear. Lowest point for me was 4.75" from collector to ground.

Black Z (name please), I actually just ordered them this morning.
I was going to order them in a few weeks, but after seeing the price increase, I figured I might as well get them now. Hopefully, I'll get them in a week or so.
If you look at the pic with the Camaro with the Thorleys (which is not mine) you can see they are almost flush with the front subframe. The collectors are 2 1/2 inches which also help ground clearance.

doverwht69 Mar 7th, 07, 05:58 PM I have to agree with comments about Summit and the shipping charges. I just ordered the same headers and a Flowmaster 17139 system from them and the entire kit and kaboodle cost me $6.00 for shipping and a $10.00 handling charge. The boxes must be fairly large and heavy. Heck of a deal as far as I'm concerned.

Wow, thats the first time I have really seen how much clearence the Thorleys give you around the power steering box. I like the idea of knowing there is plenty of room for these to sit and not just barely avoiding the dimple machine. Looked like plenty of room for plugs and wires there too. I just might have to bite the bullet and pay the extra $$$ for them now.
hollywood406 Mar 9th, 07, 12:49 PM Just out of curiosity, have you or anyone else have 1/8th or 1/4 times with the 1 5/8 tubes? I've always run the 1 3/4" hooker super comps. Thanks!
onovakind67 Mar 9th, 07, 12:59 PM My 3475# 406 daily driver tow car ran 11.75 @ 117 with 1-5/8" primaries and 2-1/2" collectors.
Everything(exhaust) is now all hooked up and took it out for a spin. Lowend and midrange power does seem to be up over the 1 3/4" set up. Car blew the tires away from a roll like nothing. If I can get some real sticky tires on her it should 60 foot sweet!
mdla Mar 26th, 07, 07:47 AM I just received these in the mail from summit and when I took them out of the box I thought they were damaged from shipping. There's a big dent across the number one tube about where the number three plug wire would go.
So I came back to this thread and looked at the pictures from 6D9's car (page two of this thread) and they look like they have the same dent. Is this normal? It seems excessive and like it would really hurt flow. Anybody else with these headers and are yours the same? Thanks for any info.
Granny's 69 Mar 26th, 07, 09:57 AM yes, my Summit 1&5/8" ceramic coated headers have the factory-made dimple in the #1 tube for plug clearance on cyl. 3...
mdla Mar 26th, 07, 10:29 AM Thanks for the reply. So, once on the car does it seem okay? Maybe I overreacted upon seeing it but the reason I ordered them was the reviews on fit and not needing to dimple the headers for steering box clearance. The factory dimple in the #1 tube seems much larger than anything I've seen for steering clearance.
The other headers I considered were hedman #68278 but thought I'd try the summits for the price. Anybody have these and what do you think of them?

Mike, I had the Hedman 68270, which I had ceramic coated and are identical to the 68278 which come coated. I had to "clearance" them to fit my power steering box and the drivers side hung too low for me, so I switched to the Thorleys.
Mike
Granny's 69 Mar 26th, 07, 02:33 PM My Summit headers fit great. I didn't have to bend or dimple the headers at all and the stearing box clearance is good. My car has A/C, so I did have to clearance the A/C "suitcase" a little though. All in all, I'm very pleased with the Summit headers. Hope that helps...
mdla Mar 26th, 07, 02:44 PM Mike, thanks for the info on the hedmans. I was just put off when I saw the dimple in the #1 tube for plug clearance. I'll take another look at it and see if I think I can live with it. It's hard to beat the price and other than that they look pretty good especially if they fit well.
blainedoe Mar 26th, 07, 02:46 PM has anyone used these summits for a big block in a 67?
Granny's 69 Mar 26th, 07, 03:07 PM mdla & others,

Sorry, my cell phone camera isn't the greatest. But it might give you an idea of what the Summit headers are like installed.
mdla Mar 27th, 07, 07:13 AM Thanks for the pics. I've decided to give the summits a try. You can't beat the price and they seem to fit well. Now all I have to do is put the engine together, get the engine compartment cleaned and painted, decide on a trans and convertor, do some rewiring.....
