View Full Version : V8 block machined from solid alum. Rayzor Mar 10th, 07, 11:27 AM This is COOL! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsmiIeAkE-o SixtyAte Mar 10th, 07, 12:41 PM Boy...unreal ! :) Kev 69-Z11Pacer Mar 10th, 07, 04:36 PM That is one neat, and probably very expensive machine. WOW. Larger Dave Mar 10th, 07, 04:51 PM I think that is a piece of sculpture. I have thought about doing just that after I win the lottery to build a super sized big block with bigger bore centers and higher cam tunnel for a few more cubes. Larger Dave Peter Constantine Mar 10th, 07, 05:38 PM Those machining centers are amazing.I used to run a 3-axis machine.I'm not a machinist but there was no one else,so I ran it.It used what was called "conversational" programming so I didn't have to know code, just tell it what I wanted it to do.My hat's off to the programmer that did that engine block.I can't tell you how many times I would program that machine and set it up to run overnight only to find a broken cutter,a mangled lump of stock where I had hoped to find a finished part and coolant from one end of the shop to the other when I came back in the morning. That thing could be some frustrating!! That video makes my Bridgeport look like a boat anchor. pdq67 Mar 10th, 07, 07:46 PM Dave, I think you can now buy blocks w/ 5.2" bore centers.. And the old 500" type Cad. and 352" Packards are 5".. pdq67 1972lt1 Mar 10th, 07, 08:20 PM Come on Powerball Lotto! coach420 Mar 10th, 07, 08:52 PM I'm not astute enough about engine block manufacturing to conclude whether this was merely a demo or intended to be operational. I wonder about cooling jackets and the camshaft bore among other things. Definitely not mass production. pdq67 Mar 10th, 07, 10:55 PM I'm almost positive that billet aluminum blocks are out there that aren't water cooled except for the heads.... Heck, they ONLY run a quarter mile at a time so are fine!! he, He!! pdq67 KevinW Mar 11th, 07, 06:40 AM If you look closely around the cyl walls, they cut a deep groove around all the cyls. I betcha that is the cooling jacket. Robm Mar 11th, 07, 12:04 PM yeah that is the water jacket. i bet its overhead cam too davidpozzi Mar 11th, 07, 12:46 PM I'm almost positive that billet aluminum blocks are out there that aren't water cooled except for the heads.... Heck, they ONLY run a quarter mile at a time so are fine!! he, He!! pdq67 There are FORGED aluminum BB Chevy blocks! I heard they can blow a rod in a Top Fuel car and the block survives. http://www.cnc-west.com/Issues%20Folder/2001%20Feb%20March/60%20From%20Newspapers.htm David pdq67 Mar 11th, 07, 02:55 PM WAY COOL READ, David!! Thanks for posting it.. pdq67 dawg Mar 11th, 07, 04:19 PM that is a minature sized not full size btw elcamino72 Mar 11th, 07, 05:52 PM Awesome, thanks for the link! |
