I have the money right now to paint my 68 camaro. It will be about a 4 grand job including removal of a lot of pieces so they can paint it nicely. But I also plan on doing an engine/ tranny swap within 5 years, and possible a mini tub at the rear fenderwells (depending how much rubber I want on the road). And it is also time for a new wiring job that I have the wires for now. What does everyone think? Should I paint now? I currently have no room in a garage so the car is outside with a waterproof car cover over it. It is mostly primer with spots of the original color showing through. I also have some bare metal that I will need to cover with primer soon. So should I paint now and have it risk the elements for a few years, or actaully do the frame off in 5 years then paint it?

Paint it now! You will enjoy it more. 5 years is a long time to wait. You can do most of the work you mentioned without hurting the paint.

Primer is pourous and will allow the sheetmetal to rust over time. Allowing the car to wait 5 years before painting will add up to more work when you do paint the car.

Remove the rust and shot sealer instead. It acts as a moisture barrier. Why paint the car twice. It'll only add up $$$ and layers of paint. Too much paint will end up cracking.

Wouldn't a primer sealer resist moisture though? I know surfacer will suck up the moisture quik. But the sealer should protect it for awhile, no?

Sealer has no corrosion capabilities. Unless you use an epoxy, then its limited to a point. For the most part all sealer does for you is to fill minor surface imperfections, color hold out and gives you a uniform surface to spray on.

So these cars running around in primer aren't really that safe?
I thought they were. But I won't dispute someone in the profession, you know more about it than me, that I know. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

How's the move going ragtopman, still in alaska?

Been there, done that. Paint it now! I drove my elky around in primer several years, sanding and repriming when surface rust appeared only to have to completely strip it down and start all over for painting.
