View Full Version : 17s or 18s??????
brandonc707 Mar 23rd, 07, 08:01 AM I am looking at buying wheels for my 67 RS. I have narrowed it down to
17s or 18s it seems to me that more people are running 17s than 18s, why?? I know that 18s are more $$ but I think they may look better.
I am thinking about either Billet Specialties "chicayne" or Intro "Pentia".
Is there anything that you guys know that I should consider before I make a purchase??
Has anyone bought wheels from Newstalgia?? how are they??
Where can I buy Intro wheels??
Any input would be helpful
PICTURES OF CARS WITH 17s or 18s WOULD BE MORE HELPFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks :beers:

ChevyThunder Mar 23rd, 07, 11:51 PM I have 17s and I wish I went with 18" for one simple reason.. though my car is a 4 wheel disc car already ,I would like to put the latest and greatest stuff on it... with TT IIs in 17" I cannot fit anything larger than a 12" rotor in the wheel...which is ample, but the 13" and up looks sooo much cooler :)
It's not a 69 but this will give you a good look at the 17s

77thor Mar 24th, 07, 08:19 AM IMO... anything larger than 17" doesn't look right on these cars.
They are too much like wagon wheels.

I had 17" TTII's and 13" brakes, so not sure where your interference problem is.

ChevyThunder Mar 24th, 07, 09:12 AM Jody... this comes from one of our sponsors... I ended up getting the Wilwood 12" kit and I have not put it on the car because to be honest it looks kind of cheap. I do not know if I am spoiled because my race cars have "real brake" that look like "real brakes" but I agree.. that is why I stayed with 17" because I thought they were the proper look and allowed me run a larger tire with no modification to the car.
opmcustoms Mar 24th, 07, 05:04 PM Big is nice, they look good if the wheel is right for the car. I have a 69 conv. I will get it back from paint this week. It has 20's looks great. I will post pics soon check out opmcustoms.com if i can figure out how to post pics!
sweetblue69 Mar 25th, 07, 01:46 AM I've got Cragar SS in 17's front, 18's rear. Looks badass.
ProdigyCustoms Mar 26th, 07, 09:33 AM The Wilwood Superlite 6 piston 13" set up requires more clearance then a Baer track 13" set up. Just enough to be a issue.
Dayton68Z28 Mar 26th, 07, 03:22 PM I've got Cragar SS in 17's front, 18's rear. Looks badass.

6D9 Mar 26th, 07, 03:26 PM 18's all the way around and love them. I think they look much better than 17's.
69camarojoe Mar 26th, 07, 07:49 PM Just got my Billet Specialties 18" today and mounted them. No clearance issues that I can see. And I do like them more than 17". I'll post pics soon.
Now I just need bigger brakes :D
guccieng Mar 26th, 07, 10:33 PM i see everyone talking about the look of 17's and 18's. but what about the diameter of the wheel lip to lip? for instance, my wheel vintiques 17 inch rallys are 18 1/2 inches across, so they look bigger than some 18's and some 18's may look smaller than my 17's. just something to think about. ultimately, pics or seeing them in person on the car should be the deciding factor, but not always easy to do...

cowboybob Mar 27th, 07, 12:43 PM Hey Jody...
Your front suspension looks outstanding! Can you provide some specs and product information on the subframe and suspension set-up that you are using? I may want to "clone" your set-up.
Thanks,
Brian

thanks Brian. That was a Wayne Due setup with Vette arms and spindle, but he's no longer in business. There are several other options out there from Morrison, DSE, 21st Century, ATS, and many more that all seem to work well.

fladoans Mar 28th, 07, 06:14 AM I am putting 18's on my 69. I bought Budnik 18x12 for the back and 18x8 for the front. I also have Baer 13" Track brakes. I attached a couple of pictures - not very good since I am still setting up the car. But, one thing I did discover is that I bought the fatlip rim style (basically the rim is turned around backwards) and had them put the value stems in the back of the wheel. But, after I started mocking everything up I figured out that the value stem could interfer with the caliper. :clonk: Luckly for me it did not, but I don't think this combo would have worked in a 17" rim.
brandonc707 Mar 28th, 07, 01:14 PM Those are nice Steve!! I hope you post pix of your 69 when you are finished
can't wait to see that finished!!!!!!!!!!

I went with 18's just because everyone has 17's. You said it yourself. Why be like everybody else! http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k264/pnewell44/000_0702.jpg
s4dustin Apr 18th, 07, 06:15 PM going to go with 18s to fit my wilwood 13 inch 6 piston fronts.....dont know what type of 18s yet....

those are 18's on this 68
ChevyThunder Apr 19th, 07, 12:15 AM With the help of Jody and Pascual Marquez I was able to find a brake set were a 13" rotor would fit in a 17" wheel. Though I like the 17" a lot I would probably opt for 18" if I had to do it all over again. I wanted to do 14 or 15" rotors and six piston brake calipers up front and with 17's they won't fit. So when deciding on a wheel size keep in mind what brakes you are running or what brakes you would like to have down the road just to make sure the wheels you chose will accomodate the size of the rotor and caliper.
Chris986S Apr 27th, 07, 11:22 PM Billet Specialties 17" Qualifiers, 17x8 in front, 17x9.5 in rear. By the way, I also have the matching steering wheel.

67FamilyFun Apr 28th, 07, 03:00 PM Has anyone bought wheels from Newstalgia??
I bought from Newstalgia...they were great to deal with!
bigtyme May 2nd, 07, 10:08 PM great looking dash, who makes it?
Rich-Allen May 3rd, 07, 06:11 AM I'm running 17's all the way around.

I got 13" brakes behind my 17" wheels with room to spare but not all wheels are the same so use the templates you can download and make sure your brake and wheel choice fit even with 18's.
The other thing to think about is performance. Carl C's car was used in a track test a few years back and the results were 17" wheels with 40 or 45 series tires performed better than both larger and smaller wheel and tire combos. Keep in mind Carl's car is not tub'd so the test results may not apply to larger 18's and wider rubber requiring some kind of tubbing.

Mr. B May 4th, 07, 07:36 AM musclecarjohn,
what wheels are those on your 70, and your buddy's 69?
031165 Jun 12th, 07, 08:58 AM I've got a 68 conv. currently with drums. I will eventually switch to discs. I'm going to go with 17's and 255/45 tire. What offset did you use on the 67?
68Jon Jun 12th, 07, 12:38 PM I personally prefer the 18's over the 17's. I actually would go 18's front, and 19's rear, with a DSE minitub, but different strokes for different folks....
The Baer Track 13" system will fit behind a 17" rim, but I recommend checking the template baer provides to whatever wheel you choose. Billet Specialites, and Intro both build 17's that will work. If you have any questions, feel free to email me jon@driverzinc.com. It's all a game of overall diameter of the brake, caliper offset, and inside diameter of the wheel and length of mounting pad (or caliper clearance built into the wheel).

:D LOL!!!!!!
cordovan68 Jan 13th, 08, 05:45 PM Go with 18" wheels!!! If you want to put a bigger wheel on you car a 18" wheel will fill you wheel well very nice. The only thing that you should watch for is your backspacing!
Also, I don't know if you talked about you suspension but you are going to want to lower you car so that the fender lips sit down on the rims. To many people put big wheel on there first gen camaros and don't lower them! I have a 68 camaro that is lowered on 18 inch wheels.
If you want any pictures I will email them to you. This is my first time on this forum and not sure how to upload pictures on to it.

what wheels are those on your 70, and your buddy's 69?
Sorry man...it's been a long time since I've been here.
My '70 has Vintage Wheel Works V-40's on them (17x8/17x9.5's) w/245/45 & 285/40 rubber.Backspace is 4.75" in front & 5.5" in back.
My buddy's Blue Z/28 has American Racing CL205's...18x8's all around (4.5" b/s) w/265/35 & 285/35 rubber.
Sorry again for the slow response...

What mods do you have to make those 18" wheels fit? Do you have minitubs off set shackles?
gbatey Jan 22nd, 08, 03:54 PM I put 17s on the front and 18s in the rear of my 68 and it looks awsome,go to www.coys.com and they have many pictures.Gene
