View Full Version : no od in new od!!!
kustomwerker Apr 2nd, 07, 06:22 PM i had a 2004r rebuilt and shelved for about 4 yrs...finally found a new home for it in my 79, so i pulled the vb and installed a bto unit with their modified plate and new gaskets...i put in a 2400 rpm stall with l-u from bto also...i made a crossmember for my new juicebox, and loving bolted her in...the vb was sitting on the shelf from when we put a manual vb in the bto trans...thats also where the conv came from...both had about 15 miles on them...this is where the trouble began...i wired a toggle for l-u , and took her for a burn yesterday...only goes into 1st sometimes from a stop...1-2 is very solid...2-3 is decent, but probably will get better when i tinker with tv cable...but NO OD!!!if the shifter is in od, you can het 3rd, but let off the throttle, and it`ll freewheel back to idle...back into the gas, and right back up to third with no slip...if in 3rd, it stays in third, no freewheeling...l-u in 3rd works...maybe gunk in the 3-4 valve of vb???gunk in 1-2 valve...at least the 1-2 works on occasion!!!lmao...if i cant get it to break up and go into od tomorrow, i`ll probably pull the vb and investigate, but wondering if anyone has experience with the vb internals...also posted on turbobuicks.com, cause they know them inside out, but no replies yet, so im puttin out the feelers...lol...as always, thanks for any help...
jaguareats Apr 2nd, 07, 06:53 PM if you dont have first some times starts in second gear. you may have governor sticking and that may cause both your problems. check servo for a cut ring. also re do tv cable. if its too far in you may have same problem also.200-r4 cable should have metal clip push in pull cable back from carb. full throttle should click in and give you pretty good adjustment right there.
TJS69 Apr 2nd, 07, 07:16 PM Yep, it sounds like a TV cable problem.
kustomwerker Apr 3rd, 07, 05:39 AM governor huh???cant really check that without dropping the pan right...figures!!!lol...well thanx for the responces...i set the tv cable by extending it in all the way, and then opening the throttle all the way by hand...it clicked out about 3 spaces...i drove it, and it was too tight, as when i left it in od, it wouldnt shift at light throttle until 3700 or so, so i snapped it out 1 more tooth and its better...i`ll fool around with it tonite or tomorrow, and post back...unfortunately, i havent driven the car in 2 yrs, so i gotta get all the gremlins back outta it before i can really whip it...thanx again...
jaguareats Apr 3rd, 07, 06:10 PM totally floor it to the floor by the throttle it will click some more in to the carb.than it will shift earlier. so easy for me to make the adjustment. doing transmissions for 23 years. another comes to mind is what gear ratio you have in rear,if you got 353 or 373 or more you need a grand national governer gear. it is green in color.lower is fine for a yellow or clear color.:beers:
kustomwerker Apr 4th, 07, 05:37 AM hey jag, i got a blow-up of the vb parts on the turbobuick site, and found that my stuck valve is the 3-4 shift valve!!!whatta load off my mind to think i might actually have it beat...lmao...thanx for the help...i really appreciate it...i`m one of those guys that hates to ask for help until i`m absolutely beat, but this site really makes it easy on ya...i`ve got 3.73 posi, but a clear or yellow maybe gear in there...i know its wrong, but for now it`ll have to do...where would i get a gnx governor???ebay maybe???
jaguareats Apr 4th, 07, 05:59 PM go to transtarindustries.com thats a transmission supply house theres 1 in conn. or a trans shop.i got a couple of them also ill send you 1 if you need be. while you got the pan down and vb out it will wake it up on shift points also. like a grand national.:beers:
kustomwerker Apr 4th, 07, 07:37 PM too late...lol...i put it back together tonite, and its frikken ausumn...toolin down the highway at 80 mph turning 2300 or so!!!i gotta het my shaft balanced due to vibration, but i`ve got a local guy that does custom shafts cheap...and they`re strong too...we`ve got 1 in the nova thats seen all kinds of power, and no worries yet...the whole problem with my od not working can be attributed to the 3-4 shift valve sticking...go figure...if i have a problem with something, i just try to figure out the least likely oddball wierd thing that can make my problem occur, and then check it...thats usually what it is...lmao...i`ll look for the gear or complete governor assy on ebay and transstar, com like you suggested, but right now, my next thing to do will be a new master cyl...mine went tits up test driving the car the other day!!!i couldnt win if i fixed the game myself...lol...anyway, thanx for the advice and help jag...ps, i found the spring i lost that went to the tv assy...so all good there too...
