Guys,
What is wrong with some people on Ebay? My wife sells some stuff on ebay(She has what she calls our vacation account, and wants to ebay our way to the caribbean next winter) Anyway I gave her the stuff that I had left over from my 68 bargin project. She is always very accurate with her discriptions and starts everthing out very low,(she considers it all junk anyway), She has an auction going off this evening for an New emblem (her wording in the ad) that attaches to the apron on the left hand corner below the hood. She started it out at 3.99, figured it she got that someone would get a bargin and she'd be happy. Well this morning the darn thing is at 21.50! They sell New for 16.98! Now she's upset and thinks she should pull the auction. I read her auction description and Nowhere does this even sound like it's a NOS piece. I guess some guys can get into a p***ing contest and don't like to be outbid at all costs but this is plain stupid.

I have seen Triumph gas filters that you can buy for less than $10 go forover $100.

Same thing happened to me selling a Muncie backup light switch bracket on ebay (new original GM in the box). I think I paid about $6 or $7 a couple of years ago. It's up to $10 or $12 new now, but some guy paid close to $20 for it. I guess if you don't know what part number to order...

For some people ebay is a matter of convenience. Forking out a few more bucks might be worth not having to spend time trying to find it elsewhere.

Also, if they have a bunch of paypal money from selling parts, its easier to use that money then using the cash elsewhere.

If she's feeling guilty, maybe edit the ad to state it is a repro, not NOS.
I do see alot of the p!$$ing contest mentality too.
And the convenience of sitting on your duff in the evening, swilling beer and bidding stupid amounts on parts that come right to your door.

Anytime you put something up for auction, someone will get into a p*$$ing contest with someone else and over pay. It happens on Barrett-Jackson all the time. Cars that are nice on collectorcartrader.com, craigslist, etc. go on e-bay or Barrett-Jackson and sell for two or three times that amount. I say good for your wife, be happy and let the auction ride. As long as you are honest in your description and have a clear conscience then it's OK.

Case in point: If I list my alternator on e-bay (for a 1969 Camaro with SBC) and say may need to be rebuilt and somepne pays $500 for it, it's their choice. Someone paid $51.01 for an alternator bolt, yes a stinkin' Chevy alternator bolt for over $50 bucks a few weeks ago on e-bay.

I went through the same experience a few months ago when I sold my original radio plate for a '69. I knew they were worth a lot to some people, but I was unprepared for all the "I'll buy it right now, give me a price, i don't care how much" emails I received. It's nuts, but if someone wants to pay that much, then all the power to you (so long as everyone is running a fair auction).
We just went through it again when selling my kid's play structure. We ended up selling it for what we bought it for 3 years ago. The bidders had to know that they could have gone to Toys 'R Us and bought it for the same price. we had email offers to sell it for even more than it sold in the end.
I think some people just like to bid and win things.

I sold the cardboard glovebox for a 89 Cavalier on ebay, started out at $0.99... 14 bidders... high bidder paid $28.
How does a person even come to NEED one? LOL

I don't get it either........ My wife put my original 68 ashtray and bracket on eBay. The parts were stamped with their part numbers. I thought it would only get a few bucks, it looked like hell, needed to be sand blasted and repainted, It sold for $158.00:Unbelievable..... :noway: After that every part I take off and replaced, it goes on eBay. So far everything sells way more then the cost of the replacement part.

I sell lots of stuff on ebay. I have been for about 7 years. My sales have funded most of my Camaro project. Sometimes, once the frenzy starts, I get way more than I expect for items. Example: Once I found some leftover BROKEN, junk pieces in a box in my garage from my 57 Chevy project. It was junk. A smashed beyond useable wiper motor with one of the attachment legs busted off, some broken dash and gauge parts. I was gonna throw them out, but I said....what the heck, I'll throw them on eBay. I got just over $300.00 for the stuff. You never know.
