What takes off vinyl top adhesive but not the paint?

I've used an adhesive remover product available at the auto paint supply shops.

If your removing the top on a Original Vinyl top car, just rip it off, dont worry about the paint, there is none. vinyl top roofs are not finished like that of a standard hard top. the metal is left Ugly and non finished. if your planning on making it a standard coupe hardtop, I hope your good with Bondo and sandpaper.

I agree with Chris. My soon to be ex-vinyl top car was in pretty bad shape along the top of the windshield and all around the rear window. I disagree about the bondo, as it will only cover the rust and won't cure it. You will need to cut all of the rusted metal out or the rust will just come back later.

The metal is ugly from a finish standpoint but it is not too rusty and there is paint. I tried a regular "adhesive remover" and it is taking the paint off too. I guess I got no choice but to strip to bare metal. I agree about not using bondo and plan to weld the couple bad spots at the front window as they won't be seen anyway. Still looks like a lot of sanding. Anyone know any shortcuts?

the quarter seams are not finished on a vinyl top car either.you should melt all the lead out of the seam, mig weld it and finish it off with plastic filler.if you put the plastic over the lead it will bubble after a while.or if your old school you can just finish it in lead.

I used paint friendly solvent (ie prep wash) and some elbow grease. Took off the old adhesive and left the paint alone....
