rick69camaro Apr 8th, 07, 02:24 PM Does anyone know if I can use a 68 camaro dash bezel and camaro gauges in my 69 firebird //changing bird to camaro project.. the dash on 68 camaro looks alot like 69 firebird I would use firebird dash if I had one but thay are rare ,,and dont know where i can find one for less than 450.00
for a nice one,,any help? I would like to keep it all camaro parts if I can.
69X11 Apr 8th, 07, 07:19 PM Why ruin a Firebird? If you want a Camaro, sell the Firebird and buy a Camaro. No, the dash is totally different anyhow.
rick69camaro Apr 8th, 07, 09:03 PM wow..thanks alot that,s alot of help...
bdzee Apr 9th, 07, 05:43 PM To answer your question, the dash is an exact fit. They are the same as far as fit goes.
69X11 Apr 9th, 07, 07:04 PM A 69 Firebird dash carrier is much larger than a 68 Camaro's dash carrier. The carrier in the Camaro is only as wide as the two gauges, the Firebird's goes from the left edge of the dash to the center section and holds the wiper switch, ralley gauges, etc. They are not a direct swap. The metal framing behind the dash is also different.
rick69camaro Apr 9th, 07, 09:10 PM Great info.. What I am trying to get is was the dash metal in a 69 firebird the same in any other cars like nova ?? or other gm cars so I can use other dashes for a custom look.. seems like a good queston ,, that someone should know for sure,,
rick69camaro Apr 9th, 07, 09:45 PM the wiper switch and all gauges mount in the birds dash plastic that I want to replace,, the headlight switch mounts in a metal bracket on the left top corner..I know its odd thing to do but I dont like the fbird dash anyway..I just hoped for something better,,
rick69camaro Apr 9th, 07, 09:52 PM Your right 69x11 Its looks like the factory cut out more metal for the fbird dash it is larger,, did thay cut a 68 dash leftover to fit fbird?? thanks
69X11 Apr 11th, 07, 08:15 AM No, it's totlly different and it's unique to itself. If you want to use another dash for a custom look, you'll have to fabricate a dash to hold the carrier that you want to use.
rick69camaro Apr 11th, 07, 08:14 PM My dash is in bad shape anyway,, how hard to just change it all out, has anyone out there changed one? how do the repos fit ,,mine has rust from sitting in ohio ,, where is a good place to get new 69 camaro dash metal replacement,, top and bottom.. thanks
red69camaro Apr 12th, 07, 10:35 AM Since none of the paperwork is going to mean anything. And you seem intent on making a bird into a Camaro...Why don't you use the original firebird interior and just change the badging?
The Firebirds had neater interior anyway.
rick69camaro Apr 13th, 07, 02:40 PM Interor is crap anyway,,, Here is the deal,, I know you guys don't like the idea of makeing a fbird to camaro,, but what I have is a rusty $1600.. 6cyl 3 on tree mint green body shell with no usable fbird parts ,,all you guys have camaros ,,,most not numbers matching ,,what would you do?
69X11 Apr 13th, 07, 04:22 PM Is it a standard 6 cylinder or a Sprint engine. A sprint engine has a 4 BBL Q-jet and a split exhaust manifold. If it's a sprint and it's the original engine you could easily sell the car to a Firebird lover. There are other concerns about changing it. For one, you'd be destroying a Firebird, this we know. All the parts for a Firebird are just as available as a Camaro and cost the same (maybe a little more, but not much). Second, what happens when you get stopped for something by the local police (or go for an inspection, or they're just behind you checking your plate for a proper registration) driving a Camaro and you hand them a registration that says Pontiac on it? You'll be there for a while while they "research your car. Just buy the Firebird parts and rebuild it as such and either enjoy it, sell it and buy a Camaro, or trade it for a Camaro. JMO.
rick69camaro Apr 13th, 07, 06:00 PM ohv 6 lawnmower size 1b carb. unless it is reported stolen the cops could care less .. i will keep vin on the title,, sell it? good luck.. i paid $1000. and a $600. truck, the only reason i bought it is my son has always wanted a camaro ,69 and anyone have a cheep restorable 69 for sale??
rick69camaro Apr 14th, 07, 10:18 PM :hurray: OK I am going to keep it a firebird... after all the input you guys are right ,,how about a 69 trans am clone? any thoughts?? thanks
69TAPoser Apr 15th, 07, 05:54 AM Glad to hear that you are keeping it a Firebird. It will be worth more as a true Firebird vs. a fake Camaro anyway, in my opinion. Not to mention once you get into the parts list, it doesn't make $$ sense to switch PLUS the Birds look great and are more unique than the Camaro's.
I am also doing a build that is "in the spirit" of a '69 TA, but it will be more of a pro-touring style with TA striping but non-TA colors. Here's a 1/24 diecast of what I will be doing with mine:

There are quite a few Bird supply houses, I use Ames Performance quite a bit.
Good luck with your build!
Phil
rick69camaro Apr 15th, 07, 08:16 AM Wow great ,, post the car and keep us updated,,,
69X11 Apr 15th, 07, 06:14 PM If you want to do a Trans Am clone, there is a company out there that sells a fiberglass T/A hood with a steel frame that dosen't require hood pins and fits much better than the cheap fiberglass ones.I'll try to find the name for oyu. All the parts you'll need are available. I'm doing T/A lookalike with my 69 as well, but doing it in the original white with blue stripes. If you need any help finding Firebird parts, just ask. You can also check out classicalpontiac.com and Performance Years web sites for any help you may need. There is also a place called firstgenfirebird.com. You'll find aly parts you need listed there, or place a want ad and you'll get it. They are very friendly over there.
rick69camaro Apr 15th, 07, 09:09 PM Is that ames ,, still don't know what i am going to do with it but it will be a fbird for sure , is the bell housing the same on 6 cyl 4.1 as 400 pontiac v8 ? if i want to use 4 spd set up. my funds are short,, , the hood valance and spoiler tA kit is $1200. plus the ride. i guess that's not to bad.. saw a custom fbird one line with 4th gen seats, dash, pretty cool, junk yard parts are cheep and wanted to do something different,,
rick69camaro Apr 16th, 07, 07:42 AM WOW! just checked out your site ,, my bird needs the same thing almost,,lots of rust from sitting,, but no bondo ,,and think you hit right on the color and style,,,ill guess you post it when its done..great..
69TAPoser Apr 16th, 07, 09:38 AM I just got a draft of the rendering from Ben Hermance this morning. A few tweaks to make, but here it is so far:
