Did a trunk light come standard on all Camaros or what option did you have to order to get the light?

For 1967, the U25 Luggage Compartment light was available as a stand alone option. For 68 and 69, it was only available in a combined package (Option ZJ9), which also came with the Ash Tray light, Courtesy lights, Glove Compartment Light and the Underhood light.

Ed, My 69 came with ash tray light, but not the other lights. Could it have also been part of another option group? Z23 Interior Accent Group?

Although the Z87 Custom Interior option included the Glove Box Light, the Ash Tray light would only be ordered from the factory as part of the ZJ9 option. However, each light could be ordered and installed by the dealer as a stand alone item.

For instance, your ash tray light was P/N 993580 and cost the dealer .90 cents with a suggested list price of $1.50.

The Trunk Light was P/N 993551 and had a suggested list price of $2.75.
The Underhood Light was P/N 993553 and had a suggested list price of $2.90.
The Courtesy Lights were P/N 993607 and had a suggested list price of $6.65.
The Glove Compartment light was P/N 987188 and had a suggested list price of $2.65.

Note that the above are 1969 part numbers and prices.

Ed,

So if I had no evidence of the other lights, then it had to be dealer installed?

My underhood harnesses were pretty well hacked up, and the original hood was gone, so finding evidence there is impossible.

Wasn't the trunk light an add on harness that was plugged between the front-to-back harness, and rear harness? If so, I don't think I had that.

For the courtesy lights, should there be screw holes on the underside of the dash? Approximately, where should they be?

Looks like it unless you can find evidence of the Courtesy Lights or the Trunk Light.

For the Convertible, the Trunk Light harness was patched into the License Light connector and then ran next to the main harness toward the front of the car and then veered off up to the trunk lid where the wheel well came down and met the trunk floor. It ran up to the lid via the drivers side hinge.

For the Coupe, it patched into the main harness at the top of the wheel well and ran up to the trunk lid in the same fashion as the Convertible.

Here's a picture of the 68. I don't have a 69 AIM but it's probably similar.

The screws holes for the Courtesy lights should be a few inches in on each side of the dash.

Just for curiosity, I'll look for holes under the dash for the courtesy lights, but I don't think I'll find them. I always thought the ash tray light, which is actually a fiber optic piece, was factory. Seems like a lot of work for the dealer to install, since, as I recall, it ties into the back of the dash pod.

I know I still have the fiber optic light somewhere. Is it valuable?

Unreal, my 67 coupe did not come with courtesy lights or a trunk light, but I did find the hole for fastening the courtesy light bracket on the passenger side of the dash. I have never found one of the right size or location on the driver's side.

As for the trunk lamp, I just installed an NOS one, but I learned a few things in the process. The drawing from the AIM supplied by Ed is very enlightening, as it contains a ‘View C’, which I don’t believe is in the 67 AIM. The bottom line is that for coupes there is a one-to-one connection for the dome light in the area portayed in view C. What you need is a one-to-two connection – a line splitter, in other words, with one connection going to the dome light and the other going to the trunk light. A quick glance in Rick's catalog makes it look like the repop trunk lights include that connection.

If you are forced to use the connection shown in ‘View B’, your trunk light will only come on when the trunk lid is in the raised position AND the tail-light circuit is energized (i.e. the headlight/parking light switch is pulled out or switched on - however it's done on a '69).

Ash tray lights were actually fiber optic cable and I believe the light source was the heater/Ac control assy. The tray I had has this on 69,, 67 may be differant.

Correct. Fiber Optics like the U28 Vigilite Lamp Monitoring option.

I don't know about the 69, but for 67 and 68, the source for the Ash Tray light was one of the bulbs in the instrument panel (see below).

As for value, they were repoping these things for a long time, but I just noticed they're been discontinued (Rick's). I've seen NOS units go for around $30.00 or so on ebay. There's one on there now listed as 67-69 Camaro, but it looks to be too long. However, as we all know, EVERYTHING on ebay is for a 67-69 Camaro!!

The light source for the ashtray light fiber optic on a '69 is a bulb socket on the top of the right-hand side gauge pod, except on automatics with column shift - on those, the fiber optic uses a snap-in adapter into a rectangular hole right next to that bulb socket.

:beers:

John, my car was a column shift auto. Is that opening for the fiber optics on all, and covered with black tape, if not used?

Yes - both sides took a piece of tape over the rectangular holes on everything except U28 (ashtray lamp); shown in the A.I.M. in UPC 12, Sheet B5.
