I'm taking my windshield out and replacing it. I'll be using 3M™ Window-Weld™ Super Fast Urethane, my question is when the glass guy sold me my last windshield he put a black primer of some sort around the inside edge of the glass about an inch wide . Does anyone know what this primer was and where to get it ?
Thanks

Urethane primer. You can get it from any glass shop.

O.K. Thanks. I guess I'll try to get the glass guy to prime it for me and then haul it straight home and install.

I believe the primer is a small tube of some type of wetting agent, just to make the "glass ribbon butyl tape" become tacky. Should come with your glass tape kit. 3M usually supplies it. You need to apply this agent to body opening and glass edge too. Don't forget the little spacer blocks. Glass seam tape end to the bottom please. Keep fingers off edges where agent is applied.

I'm not using the tape but the urethane in a tube. I know there has been alot of discussion on this subject before but I like the window weld in the tube.

Just make sure the glass does not sit to low and then the chrome wont look right. You will have a gap between the glass and the window chrome.

..or you can crack your window.

If the windshield did sit too low how or what would you use to raise it ?

I have this issue on a '72 GTO I'm in the middle of restoring. The prior owner had a glass shop replace the windshield and it sits too low for the chrome. It looks awful so I'm going to have to take it out and reinstall it w/the correct sealer.
The stuff they use in the tube to install windows makes it super tough to remove the windshield w/out cracking it.

Butyl Tape. Do it right. Its so much easier and neater .

Use a 3/8" foam dam, also available from the glass place and a slower setting urethane caulk. The 3/8" dam will keep the glass up against the stainless. This is the right way to do it.

As JohnZ has stated on the forums several times, butyl tape is not correct. It does not allow the glass to give the body the structural stiffness it needs.
